Vein viewer? Is this a real thing?
IVs are one of the things I am most nervous about placing during nursing school. So I am all about this vein viewer.
What do you all think about it?
Placing an IV catheter definitely requires skill, but it is not "just a skill" There is so much that should and NEEDS to be known and assessed prior to its placement as well as s/p insertion. Poor outcomes result when one thinks of it "just as a skill"
Since you quoted me, my point is most think of it as "just a skill"...my point being assessment is HUGE (that includes assessing IV placement) is FAR more important than the skill of IV insertion.

A sales rep brought one to an ED I worked at- I'm a pretty good stick, but that day we happened to have a regular who was a very large, very dark-skinned man with terrible veins and severe autism. Getting IV access on him was usually a horrible, traumatic-for-everyone procedure that required multiple sticks and him being restrained- with the light I was able to get a line first stick on a vein I would never have been able to find without the visual. I was sold, but management wasn't. =(
I don't think they'd make a big difference for the average patient, and you still need to be on point with your IV fundamentals. But for difficult patients, it can be a big help.
