Is a post-graduation internship possible?

Published

Hello Everyone!

This is my first post on the forum. I live in SC. Like many, I am a new graduate of a local tech school ADN program, and, the rude awakening that I should have been working as at least a patient care tech while in school has set in. Basically, after three months of looking, I have received no responses-not even polite rejections. So, I figure it is time to start thinking outside of the box.

I had heard of externships from a few students while we were still in school. I wondered if it would be possible to create my own intership opportunity (probably unpaid) with a dialysis center or local hospice center, maybe DHEC programs. I am already volunteering with a charity community clinic which allows me to do vitals and take patient history. I always try to apply the A & P to understand the pathophysiology of each patient's condition. While I am unemployed and my time in class is getting further in the past, I figured this would keep me around other medical professionals so I can continue to at least think like a nurse until I get to act like one officially!

The idea of approaching local community services with the possibility of an internship- does anyone have any experience with this? And leads or suggestions? All are welcome! I have already learned so much from the posts I have read!
