Is Nursing the career for me? Help

Published

Hi everyone! :-)

Greetings from Ireland.

I am interested in pursuing a career in Adult Nursing. I am a 19 year old male, and I'm currently studying Biochemistry, and in September 2014 (yes, I know it's a while away! lol) plan to enter Nursing.

I currently volunteer twice a week at a local hospital; they have me in the Cardiac Surgical ICU. Although I'm certain Nursing would be a great career for me, one thing does worry me (and no, this isn't about cleaning poop, as I've read a lot of pre-Nurses are worried about, lol!)

What worries me is, I get quite upset at times seeing people unwell. I see quite a lot of sickness in the ward, and at times I come out of the place feeling depressed. For example, last Thursday, I overheard a patient tell her daughter how proud she was of her, what a great mum she made, and as soon as I got home, I just broke down in tears because it sounded like that lady was saying her goodbyes :( it just destroyed me.

Has anyone else been like this? Will I be able to over come it, or should I just not purse Nursing?

Thanks for your help and time x

hmm. i was a bit like this but over time got over it . i just go in, do my job and try to forget about the pts and all the dramma. sometimes i think about some cases and get somewhat sad but i dont have breakdowns over it . tldr ( too long ;didnt read) you may become desensitized , you may not.i guess if it doesnt harm you it would be ok to feel so strongly but if it gets in the way of your life or work, it is a problem
