Is only 3 months bedside at a facility too soon to apply to an informatics position?

Published

I got my master's in science in health informatics just this May! However, in March I moved to a new city and decided to switch specialties from ER to ICU. I was trained and am 3 months into being an ICU nurse. I had initially planned on applying to informatics jobs and then asking to go part-time or per-diem at the bedside once I have a job. I heard from my coworkers that it is extremely difficult to go per-diem or part-time at my current facility. I was considering applying to a health informatics position at my current facility, however, I'm not sure if this is responsible anymore.  I don't want to burn bridges and upset people by changing things so quickly. Especially if they'd rather lose me than have me go per-diem. I don't want to quit bedside, but I also love informatics and want to utilize my degree. Should I wait before applying? Or just apply elsewhere and risk losing my current job?

I don't know why you can't apply and see what happens. As part of the interview process you can ask if it would be possible to do per diem as a bedside nurse, or have it worked into your informatics hours. Just because you apply and get an interview doesn't mean you have to accept it, and it's the place to get answers if you're not willing to ask the department head beforehand.

There is no harm in applying, and if you get an interview you can inquire about staying per diem on the floor.  BUT be honest with yourself - if you get a M-F informatics job, are you really going to go in per diem on the weekends?
