Hello all! So some of my musician friends started a free summer camp for young girls last year. The camp teaches young girls how to play an instrument and then they get to start their own bands. They do a lot of other great stuff too like yoga and dancing. At the end of the summer they get to perform in their band as part of a festival. I am friends with the nurse who volunteered last year, she is unable to do so this year, but l know the main thing she did was help monitor blood sugar levels of the diabetic campers. My friends have asked if I would be interested in being the camp nurse this year. I think it's a really great project and I would love to contribute, but I am somewhat concerned with the legality of it. This has been a very small project run by my friends and I don't think they have licensed or insured the camp. Is it illegal in any way to offer first aid, maybe some help with menstrual education, diabetic education/monitoring? Could I have the parents sign a waiver? Would personal nursing insurance cover this? Any input is appreciated! Thanks!

I would look into your nursing practice act for your state.
I think you are right to be concerned about the legalities of it.
If the camp is big enough to need a nurse on site then there should be some protocols in place.
I work as a camp nurse 1 week during the summer, but the camp I go to is a sleep away camp. That has a medical director that has signed off on standing orders. Every camper/ parent signs a medical waiver listing allergies and what OTC medications they approve of for their child.
I also would look over in the camp nursing forum for more responses
