Is it just me that feels like even though I have been in nursing school for a while I don't know a D**N THING!!!!

I should know something... Right? I mean, I guess I do but I definietly don't feel like I know enough.

What should I have ingrained in my mind and soul by now???

Help

Someone PLEASE drop some very wanted knowledge on me

:twocents: I need more than a penny for my thoughts

Don't feel bad, I'm in the same boat. I start my clinicals next week and feel like I don't know jack crap:lol2: I'm just praying I'll remember something, anything. Good luck

I usually fluctuate between feeling halfway competent and feeling like I don't know anything. The brief flashes of brilliance are really nice, but alas, they're brief.

I at least feel better prepared now than I was when I started. I took assessment and my first clinical simultaneously. I was responsible, in clinical, for completing and charting a complete head to toe assessment, even though all I had learned to assess by my first clinical was skin!

Take it from a new grad: You will ALWAYS be learning in this field...it's one of the things that makes it so appealing to me... I know I will never be bored, and I will always be challenged. You know more than you think you do, but don't ever think that you have learned all there is to know. I just started my first job as an RN, and I am realizing how different "real" nursing is compared to school. If you always remain teachable, and open yourself to learn new things, you will do fine.

Hi all!! (soon to be Nursing professional staff)

I am new here to the board..but definitely not to nursing/heathcare;)...i was just having the same discussion with my friend who is also in a Pre-Nursing program where we live. I had just explained to her that it would be very beneficial for new or prospective NS to volunteer or spend a week or two in a LTC facility to experience what takes place. It would be sad to go through nursing school only to get to clinicals and have second thoughts or a change of heart...:o

Ive been lurking on here for awhile now and there is alot of encouragement and support for everyone...that is so good to see.

My pennies are piling up

:banghead: i will graduate in exactly 32 days and i can tell you that there are still times when i feel like i'm slamming my head against a brick wall.

in nursing school, insane amounts of information is flung at you at warp speed and you are expected to engrain it and retain it. the reality is, there is soooooooooo much to learn that you end up feeling like you know absolutely nothing.... but, there is hope, if you know even 25% of the 15,000 pages you were given that's a lot that you do know.

i guess what i'm trying to say is - relax and give yourself credit for what you do know, rather than beating yourself up about what you don't.

I think nursing school teaches you, but there's so much more to learn on the job. I don't think you're alone at all. Talking to graduates that I know, I think this is a pretty common feeling!!!

Im being encouraged yet again just knowing that having doubt or thinking I wont be able to recall/remember something, anything at all times means im not less than human. I dont think any of us lack the ability, we should understand that the brain requires us to retrieve our files with stored information.

Don't sweat it so much. You have so much crammed down your throat in nursing school that there is no way you are going to remember it all! The most important thing you truly need to know in any situation is where to find the answer. When I graduated I felt like I had paid thousands of $$ and learned nothing other than basic assessment and certain pharm values we were tested over constantly. You know more than you think you do, and if ever in doubt: ASK!! RT, Pharm, other nurses, or pull out the policy and procedure manual.
