...for a beginner. I just started school (about to finish my 2nd mod) and the stethoscope they have at school really iritate my ears. They are so uncomfortable. A couple of my classmates have purchased a Littman one of them you can hear way to much though, like the shirt moving...lol. So I wanted one just for basics, I don't need to hear anything extra. Would this one be a good one for starters? TIA!

I have crappy hearing so I bought a nicer scope....IMO you get what you pay for in terms of equipment....I'd go for the lightweight II SE....it's got both a dual-sided chest piece...sometimes the one-sided pieces are a little bit tricky to handle when you're trying to distinguish between low and high frequency sounds.....

You will find that having a good quality stethoscope will pay off in the long run of your career. No matter what area of nursing you are employed in, it will benefit you. With that being said, I have used both of these scopes. I would trust the select over the lightweight anyday. The select is an all metal scope while the lightweight is an all plastic scope. To some that may not matter, but if you rely on plastic in your everyday life, you have found that it is light, durable, and could probably outlast a hurricane. While that is true in the medical field, diagnostic studies show that plastic is a POOR conductor of sounds meaning, the tquality of what you are hearing, is no where close to that of an all metal scope. In my opinion...go with the select and you won't be disappointed. Even though it weighs slightly more, it won't be that much more noticeable. I use a Cardiology III by Littmann which is their heaviest scope, but after time, you get used to the tools you use most, and that means a whole lot when critical times arise!!!
