I just moved to SW FL from Vermont and am dismayed to discover both that there are no Psych RN jobs anywhere, and that the 3-11 evening shift seems to be a thing of the past here. Do you all like working those 12 hour shifts? Any other nurses out there who miss the evening shift?
Also, any tips on Psych nurse jobs in the Venice area?

Hi Sunhill, welcome to FL!!
Just seen a job advertised in Punta Gorda at the Charlotte Regional Hosp for a charge RN in the Psych depart. Sign on was $5,000.
An LPN here, and can honestly say I love the 12 hour shifts! Your work week is over pretty fast instead of the grueling 8 x 5, 3 days a week and 4 to play instead... :chuckle

12 hour shifts are a blessing. Sorry you have to miss 3-11. There are 2 hospitals in Miami you can still find them occasionally.
You only have to show up 3 times a week and they try to block your time off together.

Thanks for the tip, Mrs LePew. I will certainly check into it. I'm glad to know that many like the 12 hr shifts, and it's not being imposed from the outside. They had some nurses working 12 hr shifts in the last hospital where I worked in VT. Those of us who worked 3-11 found that we were often working with nurses who were exhausted and didn't want to do anything except leave early!
I certainly understand the draw to a 3 day work week. I have always kept my expenses low enough that I could work part time- generally 3 eve shifts a week.

You must be like me, wanting to sleep late! However, I suspect that most home health agencies in your area would hire you and pay well for psych case management.

I work at Florida Hospital-Deland and there are some evening shifts there on med-surg and on psych but the psych unit is very small so not much opportunity there I don't think. I work L&D and there is no choice, it is all 12's. I hate 12's myself and would love to go back to working 3-11 although it is nice to have 4 days off a week (when I am not called in on my oncall days). I have been blocking my 3 12's together in order to have 4 or 5 days off in a row but I am finding that I am too whipped to be doing my best work (I work 7p-7a). I have broken my days up to only one or two together for the next schedule and I will be interested to see whether or not I like that better. What I really wish is that I could get off nights and onto days but the pay is so much lower and my paycheck is already too small
