Hello,

I am aiming to get into the nursing program for fall 2017. I am extremely nervous about getting in since my gpa isnt that great i only have a 3.1 and I havent taken the tease yet. I am a mom of 2 and i struggle with severe anxiety/ depression and i often have panic attacks in fact because if my panic attacks i had a hard time passing microbiology. Do you know anyone that stuggles with really bad anxiety and is in the program? and do you know of any parents who made it succesfully through the program. Also what would be your best advice for doing great in the program such as what are your study habits? What should i focus on to be succesful in the program? Etc. I have heard that he nursing programs passing rates/graduation rates are very poor. In your opinion what are the main reason people fail out/ are unsuccessful in the program? I am so sorry for the long list of questions i just want to know the best way to get into and through the program and be sucessful. Thank you in advance.

I don't have any info about that particular program, but as someone who has dealt with depression and anxiety as well, I was wondering if you have taken any steps to combat your depression and anxiety? If not then you may find yourself not doing so well in any program.

Yes i have. I actually see a therapist every other week and i see a psychiatrist once a month for meds. It dont find that they are helping but then again I just started a new set of meds. I have struggled with this for a while so hopefully I find ways to manage it. If you dont mind me asking what are some things you found helpful that made you able to cope with your depression/anxiety.

I go to therapy and take meds as well. I also practice Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, in that when I have negative thoughts I challenge them. There is a book on CBT by Dr. Burns, I believe. I also try to keep myself busy by doing things that I enjoy. Another thing I do is I talk to myself like a good friend would. Example: I wouldn't tell a good friend negative depressing things about them self. I hope some of my suggestions help!!!

I also wanted to add that I started doing better when I realized that the meds can only do so much: I have to meet the meds half way and take charge challenging my anxiety and negativity. I also realized that even when I feel like crap(depressed) I have to make myself do things.

Thank you so much ...for all the info and i am definitely going to look into that book. Regarding the medication I have not been taking meds for even a month because i was opposed to using meds and wanted to try to get better without them. I am going to try looking more into cognitive behavioral therapy and talking to myself like a good friend would. Thank you for the info i really appreciate it.

Nursing school is very stressful, papers, chapters to read, exams that are hard. lots of studying. Obviously many people can and do graduate and are successful. If you have anxiety issues, you will need to have a clear plan on coping. Nursing school is a lot, and remember you are being trained to care for someone's life in your hands.

To be successful you will need good coping skills and a good outlet for nervous energy and frustration. You will need a healthy outlet when studying for exams and clinicals feel like it is too much.

Thank you for your response and you are right. I do need to find a way to cope when it gets stressful or I will not succeed in any nursing program.

Step One is getting the anxiety and depression that you described as severe and enough to bring on panic attacks under control. If this has interfered with a prerequisite course, and you said it did, then it will interfere with nursing courses which are typically much more intense and stressful than the more simple prereqs.

after you have that under control, consider moving on to a nursing program. if you don't have a good handle on that first it doesn't get better later. Step One.

Stats show that so, so many people struggle with severe depression and anxiety. Sadly folks don't chat about it in microbio, right? Maybe they think no one else ever feels the way they do or that no one will understand. And of course there are people around -- maybe in your class -- silently struggling with the same majorly not fun medical issue, thinking no one else gets it.

There is one huge silver lining: you WILL get it. You have empathy and understanding regarding mental health. And for someone in a caring profession, in my opinion that is golden.

I am sorry you're hurting, I hope the additional support / care / options you need falls into place stat, and I personally look forward to hearing more about your journey to and through nursing school.

Thank you so much for this info and of course your kind words i really needed to hear that. I am trying to get my depression/anxiety under control because I know if i go in without a stong mental state most likely I will not make it. Also thank you i will try update my journey into and through nursing school. Again thank you for your kind words God bless you.
