Is anyone in Dallas?

I just accepted a position as a school nurse and I'm trying to research and learn as much as possible. I need any advice you can give me as a new school nurse as well as helpful books and websites. I have found some good information on this board and I need all the help I can get. Feel free to send a PM if you would like.

I am a Dallas nurse working for Dallas ISD. If you are employed with Dallas ISD, they have a 3 year training program and a preceptor that visits you weekly and as needed. What is your greatest concern about being a school nurse?

1. School Nursing: A Comprehensive Text

2. NASN study guide for certification. Even if you will not test for a while, it is just a great (and small) guide and a fast read to help get you started.

3. Join NASN - they have great info on their website, continuing education, journal. This will also gain you access to TX assoc. school nurse website that also has good info.

4. Texas Department of Health has a great section for school nurses.

5. Get to know school nurses at nearby schools - share info!

I'm glad the district offers extensive training. Since this will be new for me, I'm concerned about what situations I may have to deal with and how to organize the clinic so that it runs efficiently. I want to learn as much as I can before I start.

One place that I learned a great deal is from Nursing Perspectives. Just Google Nursing Perspectives. It is written by a school nurse and I found it to be extremely helpful. :coollook:
