Is anyone in BMCC?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I applied for BMCC for the spring o8. I am hearing that some professors are horrible. I plan on going during the day. It's a mad house during the day I noticed that myself at Open House. My friend attends the evening and weekend program. She says it's okay so far, but, her anat/phy II Professor has mood problems, always yelling and discouraging the students. I want a great educational experience, I don't want to be around the wild, rude students. Even, in the Admissions Dept the counselor told me that they do have problems with some of the professors. I was surprised of her honesty. I pray that I will have all great instructors. Laguardia CC is a good college. They expect you to have all A's in prereq's courses or repeat them to get A's. This is what I read on the allnurse forum from a current student.

I am a A student but, I did get a B+ in one of my classes. I really don't like the idea of having to repeat any classes.

I actually hope this is true. My worst fear is that the program is light weight and that I will be delivered to the marketplace underprepared. So, thank you!

Hey secondcareeralley,

A's in clinical nursing at BMCC is a rare gem. I have seen plenty of A's preclinical failed lots of exams, had to repeat nursing course/or withdraw. If they can't make are dropped from the program. Nursing is NO JOKE anywhere you go.

At work I have met this nursing student from Adelphi, who said she got an A in medsurg, and didn't even know when the kidneys are in the body, and the signs and symptoms of reaction to a blood transfusion. She did not know many other things.

You go to school to learn, and make the best of it. If you have to eat, drink, and breathe NURSING, then that's what you have to do. School is a sacrifice, and if you think the program is lightweight, there are plenty of other schools to chose from.

Nursing finals at BMCC can make or break you because they are worth 40% of your grade. There are NO percentage for attendance, nor care plans. You have to be in class, and attend clinicals (or you will be dropped from your class).

We had 6 exams (every semester):nurse:

Exam 1 - 10%

Exam 2 - 10%

Midterm - 20% (cumulative materials from Units 1&2, and additional materials)

Exam 3 - 10%

Exam 4 - 10%

Final - 40% (cumulative materials from the start of the semester)

Remember - Psych and Maternity are given within one semester, split in half. Medsurg I and Peds 1/2 and 1/2 a semester. It was not fun!!! A couple of weeks for each subject, where at some other schools a full semester of the subject is taught. I have seen many tears shed.

I have met several BMCC graduates in high positions, and facilities who love BMCC graduates. When you graduate nursing school, and enter the real world, you will see that nursing clinical experience on the units will give you more upper hand in this profession. The more hands on experience you have, the better it gets. Nursing school gives you a foundation, but YOU have to make the best of it!!!

i should start my pre-reqs in spring 2009..would you share some info? i am curious how long does it take before you could apply to nursing program..i know they admit twice a year but how does it work in details?

it can take a long time. esp if you didnt apply to the school as a pre clinical student. if you have another major and want to transfer into pre clinical you actually have to finish the pre req first and then have your change of major accepted by the nursing dept. even after you change your major you have to be a pre clinical student for an ENTIRE SEMESTER before applying to change in the clinical sequence of the course. If you are a night student it takes even longer bc you have to do the simple pre req as well as eng 201, psych 240, bio 426 and bio 420 just the biology courses alone take 3 semesters. the average you have to reach is 3.77 for day and 3.65 for night. and you also have to be an AMWERICAN CITIZEN, no more student visa's and coming over take the program and leave. Majority of the students in CUNY's nursing programs were not citizens or residents. HTH

Hi Nechka,

I started taking classes since this Spring. I took M104 in Spring, AP1 in Summer, now AP2 and Eng101 this fall. I have two classmates who are taking AP1, AP2 and Chem at the same time at BMCC! They are working part time so they were still able to manage them (barely). I am working full time so I can only handle 1-2 classes. Already finished Psych1 and will take micro and Psych2 in Spring 2010. Hopefully, I'll be able to get into the program in the Fall next year. I have currently have liberal arts major (they screw up my application forms and so was unable to sign up as prenursing). Somebody from the BMCC nursing dept. said I can't transfer into the prenursing dept. until I finish all my prerequisites. I am targeting the evening program so I have to finish all prereqs not just the main 4 that was mentioned before (Eng101, M104, Psych1, AP1).

I can't even make an appt. to see someone from the prenursing dept. because I am not from the prenursing dept!! Stupid rules! How the heck can I ask somebody about prenursing issues when the liberal arts dept. don't have a clue?? Sorry...just venting my frustration with BMCC...Unfortunately I am stuck with them as this is the only affordable and accessible evening/weekend nursing school for me.

Anyway, I am hanging on and I am just glad that I have great classmates to commiserate with.

i'm currently in the BMCC NUR 112 day program and yes, getting A's in the pre-clinicals was a no-brainer. And yes, the actual nursing material is much more complex and difficult but still do-able if you know your A&P material. I'm just concerned because my professor is ALWAYS at least a half hour late and absent for at least one lecture out of two per week. we are supposed to be taking our third test this week but we are only on our second, which is tomorrow. i never thought i would be considering dropping a class, least of all nursing 112. especially considering all i had to go through to get in. but the sad truth is that i am considering it. even if i pass the class, i just don't feel confident that i'll gain a good foundation from this class. any thoughts?

IMHO, if you think you can pass the lecture class, then it might be good to utilize the knowledge of your clinical professor instead (if you have a good relationship with him/her). Try to ask a lot of questions from your clinical professor. The clinical environment is the best way to get a good foundation for nursing 112. Everything else, you can mostly get from reading the book.

FYI, I'm on my second sem in the nursing program at BMCC.
