Is it acceptable to walk into a nursing home facility to see if they are hiring?

Published

Hi,

I am looking into applying to nursing homes for my first work experience as a new RN and I am curious on the "correct" method of applying. I know with larger hospital systems, online applications are the way to go. If you do a walk-in, asking speak to someone, usually you are shooed away and directed towards the website.

Is this the same with nursing homes? Is it acceptable to walk in and ask to speak to someone in HR? Or do you have to go through the same online application approach? I've noticed several nursing home websites do not have online applications either.

Any tips/insight will be appreciated.

Thanks a bunch!!!!!

Moved to career assistance forum. Many facilities (acute & LTC) have HR offsite. One reason for online applications is to have a "blinded" screening process for application initial review of qualifications. HR/recruiters screen the applicants and forward those who meet minimum requirements to the hiring manager for review.

Yes, you can definitely walk into nursing homes and fill out applications!

Hiring process is much less formalized in small LTC facilities unlike large hospitals, and usually the DON makes the hiring decisions, allowing greater flexibility (and subjectivity.) I walked into a nursing home several years ago on a whim, got to say hello to the busy DON who then told me to fill out an application and come back next day for an interview. Next thing I know, she was asking me when I can start. It might have worked out so easily because job market wasn't as bad, or that I had acute care experience. Still, I remember getting phone inquiries from new grads when I worked LTC, and they were always advised to come and fill out application. So, please do try visiting.

And remember to dress professionally since you never know who you might run into. Also, since you're a new grad, try to exude confidence and be ready to present your strengths and any experience you have. Good luck!
