Irritating residents

Ever have any? Out of 60 residents, I will admit :chair: that we have two that really irritate me and other staff members. These are the residents who when you make rounds and walk into their rooms ask you, "What NA has me tonight?" If you tell them, they proceed to tell you, "Oh he/she is no good because blah, blah, blah." I'd like to tell them and have, "I'm not quite sure yet because assignments are still being made out." Then they say, I hope it's not so "n so because they blah, blah, blah." Then they proceed to talk about all the staff members they don't like. Then no matter what you do for them, they are never happy. The same residents, who if you don't come to them within 2 minutes of the call bell going off, have their own cell phones and call the nursing supervisor who calls the unit and tells you to go please see what Mr. so 'n so wants. When the supervisor comes to the unit making her/his rounds, they run right to his room to see if anyone came to see him. :uhoh3: God forbid you do something that's not up to his liking to his roommate. They are always ready to report somebody for something, some.....thing. Sometimes you avoid these kind of residents at all costs just because. These same residents absolutly know that at 0500, the CNAs start changing and getting residents OOB and yet at 0500 sharp they are on the call bell saying, "I need to be changed NOW!" "OK, someone will be with you shortly." Now don't get me wrong, I love taking care of my residents, but when they become very demanding and do things like call the supervisor when we don't jump high and fast enough for them and think they are the only one on the unit, they become irritating and annoying, making staff NOT want to go into their rooms. Please tell me I'm not the only one who feels this way. :uhoh21:

A nurse called me at home one evening to tell me that a certain resident had died, so i wouldn't be shocked in the morning. (who is shocked by a death in an Alzheimer's unit?) My only thought was, "Hallelujah! I'll never have to deal with that godforsaken family again!" We've had some pass where it was like, good riddance. But for every horrible one, there are 30 wonderful ones that I love.

I have a resident that refers to every staff member as her servant. "You are here to serve me" has got to be her favorite line. Her second favorite... " I don't know why I'm here, this place is horrible. Where my sister was....blah, blah, blah" Every time I hear these lines I have to bite my tongue, otherwise I just might tell her that I can arrange for her to be gone.... :uhoh3:

:nurse: Unfortunately I come across this type of attitude among the (some) elderly, even my own father. This generation seems to have a sense of "entitlement" because they lived through the great depression and wars, they are old, etc. etc. They sometimes think they should be waited on. I just don't let it bug me. When my dad comes over, I say "Help yourself dad!" :chuckle :chuckle :chuckle :chuckle

OMG!!I cant tell you how many times I have also heard that, They come in wth a broken foot and now want to wear diapers poop and pee on themselves and have someone else clean them up because they are too lazy to use the bedpan or they say 'i cant go on a bedpan." When I tell them to wipe theirselves they look at me like Im crazy.

Oh my god these experiences are depressing!!!! This is what I have to look forward too

When I worked as an aide, my second job was at a hospital where they had a few floors with long term care pts. When I was in orientation, I was warned about this particular pt ...had polio as a teen..was maybe in her late 40's, early 50's....iron lung at night...rocking bed during the day. Well i was orientated with another aide to care for her and my first thought was THIS IS FREAKING CRAZY!!. She sent the aide to her closet at least 6 or 7 times because she changed her mind about what necklace or pantyhose she wanted to wear. She would say things like move my elbow 1/2 inch to the right ...oh no move it back that is uncomfortable! We spent 2 hours in there providing her morning care and then rushed through our other pts. When I was on my own , I told her she had 45 minutes of my time in the morning and I would do whatever she wanted me to do but then i would leave the room to attend to my other pts. I told her to think about what she wanted to wear for the day ( I was only going to that closet once). I really think it is important to set limits...you can be very respectful and honest about it.
