Inver Hills/ Century College hopeful

U.S.A. Minnesota

Published

I just applied to both Inver Hills and Century's 2011/2012 nursing program, I got a letter back from Inver saying I am included in the selection process and will find out on March 1! I have so many mixed emotions and I have worked so hard for this.. I'm scared to death and this waiting is killing me!! I know many of you are feeling the same way, let's vent!

You guys are both right. It's so hard not to get discouraged though! I know everyone has devoted a lot of time to working on the program requirements. I'm really going to take it hard if I don't get in :( Doing my best to stay positive though!

I've went to the student success day "How to get into Nursing School" at Inverhills. Diane made this statement earlier this year Feb 8th

Selection Process points

highest points =Fall semester

After 50 it starts with Alt #1, Alt #2 and so on

if any of the 50 people decline, alt#1 gets first dibs on a fall slot and so on.

Who ever is left of the alternates after all of the fall slots are taken when

the program starts in the fall, the first 50 of those will get spring slots.

Some STATS from her lecture she reported to prospective students that day as well

GPA of 3.5-4.0 78% of people who got in fall 2010

GPA of 3.0-3.49 26%

26% had 20 of 30 LA credits completed

78% had all 30 LA credits completed

90% had all science courses completed

100% had all direct patient care hours completed

52% had prior degree's

and 96% had at least 12 credits at Inver Hills

She put these statistics out there for people to see what it takes and what the people who are getting into the program have on there records when they get accepted.

With so many people applying, they can afford to be picky, which doesn't help a lot of people. Let's face it, it's super competitive.

Good luck to all, I also am waiting for a letter from Inverhills and yes I to hope they get notices out a bit earlier than the 15th of April.

Hi everyone! I have been watching your posts as well and found them extremely helpful and reassuring. It's nice there is a forum like this for all of us nervous applicants and if it wasn't for you guys I'd probably be freaking out about the April 1st deadline by now. ;)

I applied for Inver Hills and the U of M next fall I am still waiting to hear back from both schools. However, I am not very hopeful for Inver Hills now. Although I have 4 years of direct patient care experience, it was 5 years ago. I've sent in letters of my experience, but because of the time crunch I don't think that will help much. Everything else seems to fit in great though: I have a previous Bachelor's degree, 3.7 GPA and most of my classes completed except Micro and medical dosages. Still, knowing what I heard from the nurses meeting at Inver, it looks like the direct patient care experience is their number one priority and it needs to be within two years. Bummer. :crying2:

Impatientlywaiting, have you heard anything from the U of M about when their letters are expected to come out? Just curious if you knew anything else or had talked to any nursing students from the college.

Good luck everyone and let's hope we find out some more info soon!

Qwinlyn- Don't give up hope yet. Let's wait for the letters. I am currently working on my two back up plans Rochester and St. Kates as a last resort (I'd prefer to not pay twice as much per credit but I can't wait around forever!). Good luck to you!

Sherry Hegstrom emailed me back today, and it sounds like Century is indeed using the fall alternates for the spring starters again. Of course she couldn't "guarantee" anything, but I think if people are between 1-60 on the waitlist for fall, they will PROBABLY get in for the January (the first few alternates will likely start in the fall). She said that they usually 3-4 people decline for the fall start, and then the remaining alternates (so like 4/5-55ish) will start in the spring. The final spring acceptance letters will be sent out in about a month, but we all know what a "month" might mean in the nursing admissions world. It would be nice for us all to just know for sure.

Thanks for the info. I guess most of us are screwed for Century admission this year then. Congrats Rachel!

(also lol'ing at your "who knows what a "month" might mean in the nursing admission world")

Qwinlyn- I have not heard when the U may come out. I was told a while ago it would be possible late April. I also JUST YESTERDAY got an email saying that my transcripts had been reviewed, and were sent to Nursing to eval. I dont know if this came out late, but was told by nursing if they (the college)recieved my transcripts by the deadline, I would still be reviewed. Good luck! Let me know if you hear anything, and I'll do the same!

Qwinlyn- Just spoke to UMN this morning. They will be mailing out letters late this week, or early next week. Good Luck!

Just talked to inver, they are still saying "mid April"

I just wanted to let you guys know if Rochester is an option for you as far as driving they are extremely helpful. I talked to the nursing advisor today. On their nursing application they list the "points" he said if you have above 67 points you will *probably* get into the program. Anyone who has completed all their generals at inver or century with fairly good grades can *probably* get in... check out the application on their website if you are interested. They take 60 people a term and he said around 150 apply each term. I realize it's quite a hike down there. Luckily I live about an hour drive from there. Since they have application dates twice a year you can apply for a Winter start. I just was gonna throw that out there as a back up plan possibility for anyone who very much needs to start next year.

lukeslichy - Thanks for the info on Rochester! I am trying to stay positive but it tough. You are right though, none of us know our status until we get those letters. If I don't get in this year I'll just have to bite the bullet and quit my job (I took on another job in the past few years due to financial reasons) and start working as a CNA again to gain those hours. My license has expired, so I'll have to take the course again probably with the American Red Cross. Ugh...a lot of backpedaling, but I don't see another option. The price to pay when you are a bit older and going back to school again. ;)

Inpatientlywaiting - That's great to hear about UMN! As far as I know from logging on application tracker, I know my transcript is being reviewed by the nursing department but that is all I know. I haven't heard anything or received any emails. But it's great to hear they are still in the process of looking at applications. Did you have all of your generals done before you applied? I am still missing chemistry. I'm worried about that and being a transfer. All we can do is wait some more!!!

Thanks everyone for the updates!! I'm crossing my fingers, toes, and whatever else I can for good luck!

Specializes in CNA.

Qwinlyn: Last year I applied at Inver with no work experience and in the process of finishing Micro, Medical Dosages and Goal 6 and got alternate #226. So I got a job at White Pine Senior Living in Inver Grove Heights, they will hire you with or without your CNA, and i'm pretty sure if you are employed with them long enough they will do tuition re-imbursement for the class and possibly the test. But then again, if they hire you without it and you work 480+ hours before the next application deadline that would count for experience.

Impatientlywaiting: Thanks for the update on Inver, I just wish they would get here before mid-April! Especially since fall classes are now enrolling students! Its tough because we could hear three different answers that all have different end results; we get in fall, or spring semester, or not at all. Uhh this is frustrating! People keep telling me "Good things come to those who wait."

**Does anyone know if Inver is allowing 50 Fall and 60 Spring... or 60 Fall and 50 Spring?**
