Nursing Students General Students

How about a thread that will allow us to introduce ourselves to those who are new and the new students can do the same.

I am Stephany, 42, mother of 3 children, a son 22, a daughter 15, and a son 13. I am an LPN of nearly 11 years, and I am in my first semester of a five-semester rn program.

Care to share?

Any medical background is good but being a CNA is valuable, you won't be nervous about pt. care and will know a lot of the lingo. Good Luck!

Hi Stephany

I am in my 4th semester of a five semester (ADN) program. I don't get to check in here at allnurses very often anymore because they keep us so busy!

I am also taking a required business elective this semester via the internet, it's a lot harder than I thought!

I have three kids, two teens and a toddler, so I am really trying to organize my time.

Good luck in class! Just try to pace yourself and don't sweat the small stuff, and you'll do just fine!

:rotfl: Hi! all moms out there! You know guys i was so surprised to find out that a lot of moms find their way to a success in Nursing.Could you please tell me how do tou managed your time on the family and a career at the same time. Was'nt it hard for you sometimes especially if you have your clinicals and an activity in ur childrens school.Personally, i find it hard sometimes. You know the feeling of guilt.I sometimes asked myself am i being selfish of not spending all my times with my family? But, i really do love Nursing.Im on my way to my last semester and i know i'll be working overtime this time because of the incoming local board here in my country.Could somebody give me a piece of advice on how you successfully overcome those things that come along the way. I would appreciate it much. Thanks and looking forward. :crying2:

Hi Misty-Mom, The way you can maybe justify, or at least relieve some of your guilt is knowing that you are setting an awesome example for your children. Tell them about what you do, tell them you hope some day they will choose an honorable occupation to set an example for their children also. Then they might feel that while you do have to miss some of thier programs at achool you are still doing someing for thier benefit...setting an example, trying to better yourself in order to better their style of living, having them be prould to their friends by saying "my mom is a nurse". I mean it is honorable. Promise them a Disney vacation or one you can afford and that they will look forward to...tell them you would not be able to afford it if you were not becoming, or are a nurse.Have them start saving some money too by doing extra jobs in the house or in the neighborhood. Make it a family project and keep an account of it all so they are working towards a goal too. That would be fun. Have them cut out pics of what they think would be a fun vacation and tell them depending on what amount of money your save, from chores, coupons whatever...that is what you will be able to afford. A finance lesson and a family goal. I am a mature adult and I always like to have some little treat in the corner of my mind to look forward to...why wouldn't your kids? It will balance out some of those feellings they have when they don't have their mom at the school functions. I like balance being a middle child. Your life someday, unfortunately, will be your life...not your kids. They are going to someday go on to make their own lives and it may not be close to yours. Your responsibility is to take very good care of them, of course...but also at the same time build a decent lifestyle for yourself. Kids do what you do....not what you say so set an excellent example. What do you want for them? I bet it would be a good lifestyle and the strength to go through a few rough times in order to achieve it. Let them know sacrifice brings good results but let them know you can balance all that hard work with some good fun playtime...Disney? Whatever you all desire for fun. You are looking at today, the school event today...you are blinded to tomorrow because you are worrying, crying and emotional...which is really ok if it is temporary. There is always another option. By making your kids wait a little for the payoff you will teach them a few things....patience...which is valuable, and the benefits of hard work and sacrifice. Also that you can never have it all....a reality lesson. An idea to ease the pain temporarily if you had a sister or parent, maybe a best friend that could make some of those school functions maybe it would not be the same as you, but maybe it would lessen the void somewhat. By feeling so guilty you might not succeed in being the best you can be which sounds like an awesome nurse and a good mom...all at the same time! Women are strong, more so than men. They are instinctive...you are...you have 2 desires 1.) to be a great mom, 2.) to be a great nurse. You must be able to multitask if you want to be either. If you feel guilty they will feed on that and you will have a negative cycle in motion, not really good for any of you. Be all that you can be and you will teach them the same. Have them set goals of something they want to do better, to be all they want to be. Have each kid have a goal notebood, a vacation idea book and when you are ready pick out a vacation together, have a vote. Make this struggle fun. Have quiet time so you can study and they can work on getting thier grades better than they thought they could ever have them. I have faith that you can do it just by the type of things you desire, both honorable. The nursing will fullfill your soul when your kids are grown and on thier own.Good luck...the world needs more moms like you and more nurses like you also. So give your kids a great pep talk, a big kiss for each and get to work! You just were blinded temporarily by your emotions....which did not allow you to see all the possibilities before you, hang in there now and email me back if you need a push. [email protected] Nancy K

My name's Amber, I am 22, no kids (yet), no husband (yet), living on my own, working full-time, and in my first semester of LPN school. I am in Fundamentals and Pharmacology. Going well so far! my lowest grade has been an 88, so I can't complain! :) Wish me luck

Hi!

My name is Melissa and I'm a pre-nursing student. I'm 33, a single mom to a 7 year old girl. I'm currently working on my pre-req's, and it's difficult. It's been 15 years since I've been in a classroom - I've forgotten how to study! Does anybody have advice on studying, specifically for someone with ADD and a Non-verbal learning disability? Especially Anatomy - my god the labs are killing me! :uhoh3:

I've worked as a CNA, but it's been 10 years.

Melissa

Hi, I'm a 36yr old mom who worked in theater until I decided I liked to eat more than I liked looking malnurished. Well, that and I've always wanted to be a nurse. I'm in the LPN program here in N.C. because you have to promise your first born to get into RN school around here, so I decided instead of bartending and doing nothing towards my goal, I'd be proactive. Okay, and by now you've all noticed that I like to babble, so I'll stop. I'm so happy to have this site...Good luck to everyone

I am also a nursing student with ADD. I am doing an LVN program in Texas where you finish pre-reqs and all in one calenda year. So far I have survived and made good grades. I have two study only 15 minutes at a time and then take a short break. I also put everything thing I have to do in a daily planner(even if I think there is no way I could forget it). I have to small kids so scheduling is a nightmare, but I make sure that I read every bit of material before class so class time is reinforcement not new material. I also have a really great friend who will remind me of little things that I need to do. Like buy scantrons so I don't have to bum off of her... hope this helps.

Melissa, I have ADHD....and I had been out of school for many years...I am granny aged. Anyhow this is my advice and I just graduated in May 05..

After you are done with class...DO NOT go home. Go directly to the library and review your notes from class and make study cards right then and there..EACH & EVERY class. Make it a habit. Then your cards are done for the study time.

Also, most schools will screen for ADHD. I did it and they will back you up...the department. Ours was clalled the CAP center...Center for academic progress. I could take my tests in the CAP center take double the time, etc. Just have to get the diagnosis. I even handed in my care plans a little later...just the last few.

There is a book...email me and I will tell you the name...written by two successful guys that started out in life with undiagnosed ADHD. If you knew me you would not belive I had it...I am so calm. [email protected]

I cannot stay on line anymore but will try to help you....

Thank you Nancy. I will definitely try to email you as soon as I can. I'm a little swamped right now - I have a lab practical tomorrow and am no where near ready. I've been dealing with my mother being diagnosed with Breast Cancer, so the time usually spent studying has been taken up with visits to the surgeon.
