What does your drug guide say?

This quote reminds me of other sites I go on when they say "This post is worthless without pics"...we should have one on Allnurses that says "This post is worthless without looking in a drug book first"...lol.

Sorry I'm a little ornery tonight ;)

Specializes in PICU.

As a PICU nurse, can I put in a word to NEVER EVER give a pediatric DKA patient IVP Insulin? It can cause fatal cerebral edema.

"Pediatric" is a pretty broad age group...how young are you referring to?

my Davis drug guide on my PDA does not say anything about how to administer bolus.

Don't know what mine says...but you'll kick yourself after thinking about it: (1) measure the units of insulin per usual method, (2) transfer measured insulin to an appropriate IV access device, (2b) grab some cookies and fill out an incident report if you accidentally inject yourself with the insulin in the process.

Nah...that has never happened where I work ;)
