Interview advice. UM and CM

Published

Hello

This is my first time posting here. I've been reading so many threads and you all seem to offer such great advice.

I've been an RN a little over 6 years. I have my BSN and I'm half-way through my MSN. I spent 3 years in Med/Surg and 1 year in post-partum. For the past 3 years I was a Utilization Mgmt Nurse and we did concurrent reviews for medical necessity. Most of us were laid off about 3 weeks ago.

On Monday I have a phone interview with UnitedHealth Group for a Senior Utilization Mgmt Nurse/Inpatient Care Mgr. Then on Tuesday I have an interview for a Care Mgr at a local hospital. I would love to get a position with UHG since it's telecommute and that's what I've been doing for the last 3 years.

Is there any advice you can offer to someone who has been out of the clinical field for 3 years and has never done care/case mgmt. I'm really afraid that the lack of recent clinical experience could affect what I need to provide for these positions. I'm not 100% sure this is what I want for the rest of my life, since I've never done this, but I do know that being a staff nurse was not for me. I'm currently reading the issue briefs from the CCMC website to get a better idea of a CM does.

And lastly, if they ask a salary range, I'm not sure what to say. I've looked on different salary websites and each median is different.

Thanks!

If you can, get a copy of the job description and then for every bullet point think, "Transferrable skills!" Whenever some aspect of the job comes up in the interview, like, "What would you do if...?" refer back to a similar thing, or something that required a similar thought process, or similar resources being sought out.

Everybody has a first time at a new job. Show them you are thoughtful and committed to learning, and you'll be in a good position.
