I will be moving to GA once I complete nursing school this fall. Any idea on the level of competition for new grad internships? I am excited to move to the area, however dissapointed to lose the leverage and reputation I have here.

I've been wondering the same thing. All I know is that I have called Emory and the recruiter had a recording saying that they were not taking any new grads. It may have changed since then but this was only a few weeks ago. I called Grady and for their residency/internship program you have to already be an employee. She said that we would have to do an externship first and then apply for the internship. I hope this makes sense to you...I barely understand it myself. I've been in touch with the recruiter at CHOA and she said that they still have to forward the applications to the Nurse Managers for further review. I also spoke to Northside and they said that if they don't have any positions listed on the site then none were available. I didn't see any. I've called twice and they said that both times.
I don't know what the selection criteria are. I was a bit discouraged because I am an out-of-state student who will be looking to relocate and one of the recruiters (cant remember which one) said that the relocation reimbursement comes out of the unit's budget. We all know that if a unit is tight on money they will be more likely to hire a local grad over a grad that will be relocating...well at least that's the logic that I'm thinking of.
What places were you looking into? or have already applied to? I've applied in 4 states (including my home state). I'm young and just ready to move! Maybe someone from the area can offer you a little more insight but that is all I know at this moment

Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta has new grad residency programs. They are accepting applications through their website until Oct. 24th. Good luck!! It is very competitive as a new grad in Atlanta. There is definitely a nursing shortage, however the shortage seems to be with experienced RNs, not new grads. Plus the hospitals that offer excellent residency programs for new grads are even more competitive. Most nursing schools in the Atl area have partnerships, scholarships, etc with the Atl area hospitals so these grads usually get priority over others applying. However, I am sure there are hospitals who are looking for new grads, the trick is to apply early, be flexible on the type of unit you want to work, etc.
Good Luck!
