Should I go to college in the Philippines or the US?

Hi I am currently a senior and I want to major in nursing but I am having trouble of where to go to... my choices are to go to the Philippines or stay here in America.... I'm just going to tell you guys what I am stressing about atm.

My parents and my brother wants me and my twin sister to go to college in the Philippines. According to my cousin and my grandparents who she says that are secretly against it want me to stay in the U.S. and major nursing here.

Here is the problem we were both so excited because according to my parents it would be easier to go to college in the Philippines because you go straight to the nursing program, and the tuition fee they can handle. They told me my Aunt who went to college in the Philippines graduated there is now a head nurse here.... BUT according to my friend and cousin (who are against us going school there) people who major in nursing and grad from the Philippines, most are not working as a nurse or they would not let them work as a nurse in the U.S.

Another reason why parents want us to go to the Philippines because they cannot afford Tuition here in Las Vegas and so its better for us in the Philippines.

So we are currently stuck and is need of help... Our GPA in high school is like 3.5 or above so we do not know who to listen, and which is better... My other option was to join the military because I heard that if you serve they can pay for your tuition.

So we do not know what to do we are both stressed.... So any advice? plzzz anything?

We always recommend training in the country you want to work in. Suggest reading the Nurse Registration forum

Thank you for the advice :)

It is often a long and difficult process for nurses who train in the Philippines to work in US, Canada, Australia, ect. Education in the Philippines will not be seen as equivalent and you will end up needing to do some sort of additional education when you come back to US (at a minimum). Also it is difficult to get registration in another country if you don't have nursing experience. I know a lot of people in the Phillipines get work as volunteer nurses after graduating, but this will not count as work experience when applying to the US.

Thanks for the advice :)

if you already have an american visa, its not really a bad idea. the best decision would be for you to study in the US. but since you parent's can not afford it, why not try it here. its not that bad.

Call your state board of nursing in your state and ask about it. I live in Arizona and i have worked with a lot of nurses from Philipines both in hospitals and nursing homes. In fact most of them are charge nurses and DONs. If you decide to study in Philipines you will need to come back and sit for the board exam in your state. The state board will analyse your transcript and let you know what to do next.

It is better to study in the US. But because of financial reasons u want to study in the Philippines, choose a reputable school whose curriculum is somewhat equivalent to the requirements of the state u want to work in the future.

My questions is, are you going to a 2 year school for your ADN or a 4 year school for a BSN. If cost is a factor, why not look at the 2 year option, find a job (some off tuition assistance for the next degree) and then go for the BSN. With the ADN, you do get into the nursing classes quickly.

Nursing Education in the Philippines

Pros:

>English-language based

>Hands-on practise even when still a student

>Curriculum is fully recognized in almost all countries and states;

>Patterned highly after American nursing

>Cheap, C H E A P!

Cons:

>Culture (even for a Filipino-descent)

>Full-time study required (one cannot be a Nursing student and still work)

>Bridging program needed in some countries and state (Canada, Australia, New Zealand, California, etc)

Your friends and other family and even some commeners here are right to say that you stay and study in your place as it is easier when you want get a job. However at the end of the day it is you and your parents who can decide on this. If you are considering staying and studying in the states, for sure this will burden your family as you twins will be expensive to send to school. For sure you know of, heard and have read of stories of Philippine-educated Nurses who've made it big in the States an other countries, this should be a testament of the kind of education you can get in the Philippines. You are an American, I am assuming, then going back in the states after graduating and looking for a job will be hell of a lot easier for you.

If you're going for your ADN, do US. If you're going for a BSN, go to the Philippines (you don't have to deal with the lottery/waiting list that's going on in the US, especially California). If you decide to go the the Philippines, its very intense. I went to school Monday-Saturday from freshman to senior year. Starting second year, you will have 3 days lecture, 3 days of clinical, so be prepared. And try to go to a college with Level IV accreditation for their nursing program (meaning, its equivalent to US standards). And most importantly, do your clinical cases according to the major subject (cases must be concurrent), so all DR/NICU must be done sophomore year and OR cases junior year! This is where lots of people are having problems and end up getting denied by their states BRN, and its all because of concurrency issues. Good luck!
