pension in new zealand

I am trying to find out about nurses pensions in new zealand.

I hopefull will be moving to new zealand in the next year or so, however one thing i have not thought about is pensions. Does the government have a pension system for nurses.In britian you contribute to the NHS Pension scheme which gives a generous return when retired.Usually about 40% i think of your salary with a certain % as a lump sum. You pay 6% each month of your salary and the government pays another 6% each month.

What is the system in New Zealand? Is it public or private pension system?

Any help much appreciated :) .

Hi Darrin,

There is a government 'social welfare' type pension available to all NZ'ers (and if british, you receive the british one with a top-up from the NZ one - or at least my Dad does). The governments are looking at Bill's to pass that will make compulsory savings for pension schemes, and I think the NZNO (nurses union) is looking at something similar being re-instated throughout District Health Boards, as part of the new MECA negotiations for Fair Pay (Multi-Employer Contract Agreements).

Hi Darrin

I came over here 18 months ago from the UK and now work as a clinical nurse specialist .They have no hospital based schemes ,it is up to you to set up your own private one.there has been some discussion about setting up a hospital one but that is some way dow the line.If you are coming here for good,you can transfer your superannuation to a fund over here.You can also take a percentage out in cash if you want!

I worked in the UK for 20 years before coming here so I have a superan pension over there I am not sure what to do. Its true you can bring them over here but there pension scheme is not like ours even if you pay into a pension they give them to you as a lump sum not a payment until you die so it is up to you to invest it and get a good income from it, you can get your pension paid over here when you retire but they are trying to change things which woudn't be in my favour as they are on about making it an average of your salary rather than your final salary. You can get pensions that pay out monthly here but apparently they are very expensive.
