health insurance

I am an American nurse who will be working in Sydney in the next month on a work and holiday visa. I am super excited naturally but have some questions about health insurance. Are there any nurses who have traveled to Australia who can help me out as to how they covered their health insurance? Do you purchase your own private health insurance? And if so, do you purchase insurance from your home country with some type of travelers insurance or do you purchase insurance in Australia? Sorry if this is a dumb question but I am kinda lost on the subject!

There are two main health insurance companies that i know of that maybe you could call and enquire. Im sure there are alot more insurance companies there, but there is Medibank Private and MBF, you can just google for their websites and contact info. Hope this helps. iI have always been with Medibank Pvt when i was nursing in Australia.

I'm covered by IMAN, which specializes in private health insurance for Temporary Residents in Australia. Just another option if you wanna compare the ones out there. Their website is:

if you are coming to work on a temporary visa your employer will most likely expect you to get private health insurance. there are many private health insurance providers and it can be confusing to try and make a decision, but most are similar. i use medibank private and although i've never had to use it it sounds ok

I would visit iselect.com.au which compares all the funds after you enter your requirements.
