International Nurses

Hello all,

I am asking these questions on behalf of my friend. She has BSN in her country . She is coming to USA ( most probably in Maryland ). Her question is once she passed her NCLEX in USA , whether she will be RN or RN, BSN . Or if she need to take some classes to get her BSN .How is the process to apply in nursing school for those missing credits ?

Can someone please explain the process so that I can explain it to her .

Thank you all in advance.

It depends on the country. Most likely she will RN, BSN. I'm from Jamaica and I had to go through CGFNS who decided if my course met all qualifications. I have a friend from Germany who was required to do extra courses however she was a pediatric nurse and I thought her specialization affected her outcome but a nurse I worked with back home in Jamaican is a cardiac nurse and she had no problem.

She will have whatever degree she already has, plus an RN license. "RN" is licensure and, in the US, does not designate any particular level of education. There are multiple educational routes to RN licensure in the US, and the license doesn't distinguish or specify which route was taken. Your friend is welcome to also list her BSN degree when she signs documentation at work, but that is separate from licensure, and optional.

If the state finds that her BSN degree doesn't meet the requirements for licensure in that state, she may be told that she will need additional education to qualify for licensure. And, if that's the case, she won't be authorized to write the NCLEX until she meets the state's requirements.
