Are there any nurses who have worked with their wife or husband who is a intern/resident/fellow/attending? Would you recommend working in the same hospital building as them? Or is staying in different buildings for the best?

My husband is a medical student where I work, but we are at a huge academic institution and I am miles (not literally) from where he is most of the time. But we do enjoy having lunch together when that can happen. ? I think as long as you can keep work/life separate when you are both on shift, it shouldn't be a problem. Wherever we go for residency, it's likely I will work at the same place. If we stay where we are for his residency, we will definitely work at the same place — just not on the same unit.

I think some of this is going to depend on employer policy. Every employer I've had has had some sort of policy about relatives (including spouses/in-laws) working for the same organization and what they do/do not allow. Admittedly I have paid much attention to it because none of my relatives that work in healthcare work in the same state as me.

I suppose that would depend on the individuals. My husband and I worked together when he was an intern and I was a new grad, again when he was a resident, a Fellow and also when he was an attending. Never a problem for us...easy peasy. Often in an ED. And we are not one of those couples who never argue. We just enjoyed working together. I always asked lots of questions, and he loved to teach...maybe show off some. :-)) Definitely good times.

I think it depends on you two personally. Its never been an issue for me. I do work at a huge hospital which he is all over the place but mostly in the OR and I'm usually only on my unit. I can go like a month without seeing him at work or seeing him like 3 times a week at which time I would ask him to stop stalking me lol . That being said, he's my best friend <3, but I still wouldn't want to be in a confined unit/building working closely with him ! hahaha
