Interest in PMHNP but no experience in psych

Published

I wanted to know if it was preferred to have psych experience, maybe have a psych degree or anything else - experience and education wise - in order to find a job after getting your PMHNP. It’s always easy to be allowed to sit for an exam but being allowed to find a job in the field is another story. I reached out to a girl I know through LinkedIn who has all three, experience in the field, 4 year degree, and PMHNP. She never answered, I thought you guys would be able to chime in. I’m in the NY metro area, and my experience is mainly critical care.

It probably depends on the areas and specific jobs (take a look at the jobs in your area). There is no preference for undergrad in psych.

It will depend on where you intend to work as a PMHNP. There are many parts of the US with a severe shortage of mental health providers and if you have a PMHNP, there will be no problem getting a job in one of those areas, regardless of prior psych experience.

There will be no trouble getting a job without experience, perhaps, but you will need to see 3 patients an hour.

Without experience, you'll be handing out whatever the patient requests.

Get ready for the onslaught of demands for stimulants, benzo's and all the folks who claim they hear voices, and hope to get disability payments.

My opinion only.
