Intending to relocate on F1 visa

World Immigration

Published

Good day,

Please am considering coming to USA on F1 visa to do a certificate program in community health promotion which is a year program. So that I can write Nclex within the one year, because I have intentions of doing my MSc in Nursing anaesthesia from the same school and I will need RN license. My dilemma now is could it be possible to change from F1 visa to EB3, within one year? Am from Nigeria. I have a BNSc with 5 years post graduation working experience. I need help and information. My intending state is North Carolina. Thanks for all contributions.

Apart from London which is closet, there is no other places in Africa continent where you can write Nclex. So, what is your advice. I really need information. Thanks

Sounds like you haven't really done any research. Nothing we tell you on this website will help you unless you talk to a school that is willing to accept your credentials

That is the first step

Once you do that , we may be in a better place to give you "details"

First you can't just take the NCLEX. You need to apply to a U.S. State board of nursing for a nursing license by examination as an internationally educated nurse. You likely need a credentials assessment by CGFNS. You cannot apply to states that require a SSN for application such as AZ, VT, MD, NJ until you meet the requirements of the SSA for a SSN (citizen, permanent resident, or valid work visa). To complete an MSN in the U.S. you need an active valid RN license in the state where the school is, determine if the school of nursing participates in the F1 visa program (many do not) and if you are eligible. You must provide proof of funds for travel, living expenses, medical expenses, tuition, fees, books and incidentals for the duration of your educational program as a condition of an F1 visa. You likely need your college transcripts evaluated by a company like WES to determine if comparable to a U.S. BSN, or not. You need to determine if you meet the admissions requirements (very strict and competitive for CRNA and very few will sponsor for F1 visas especially if CRNA is not recognized in your country. Since the purpose of a F1 is not immigration but to train you to return to work in your home country.

I have admission offer already for certificate program in community health promotion from University of North Carolina at Charlotte. And I have applied for licensing with North Carolina board of Nursing. Also I have started my credentials evaluation with CGFNS. But I want to ask people that have passed through the same thing with me. So that I will know what to do and not to do. My intention is to study MSc in Nursing anaesthesia, but from my research no school will offer foreign trained Nurses without practicing license in that state admission. So that is why I opt for the certificate program, so that I can write Nclex before I will finish the program since is just a year program.

Do you have ICU experience? No RNA program will admit student without a valid license for that state. Is this a post-BSN certificate that is not likely eligible for OPT and if it were you would be required to work in a community health program which would not create eligibility for a CRNA program. Do they even utilize crna's in your country?

I looked at the program it's a non nursing post bac cert towards a community health education certificate. If eligible for OPT you would be required to work as a community health educator not as a critical care nurse if you could even secure an employer willing to sponsor for a year. Why would you pay for this program if you have no interest in working as a community health educator?

This certificate will do nothing to help you gain eligibility to taking or passing the NCLEX nor will it get you eligibility to work as a critical care nurse

Actually I was looking for a program that will enable me to come to USA, I actually discuss with one agent PassportUSA.Com, a friend sent it to me and I discussed with them and they promised if I could get Nclex they will sponsor me for EB3 visa and stuff like that. But with the certificate program i believe I will be able to work on campus and obtain ssn which is a requirement for issuance of RN by the state. Then I will inform the company for sponsorship. But I want some people with such experience or something similar. What program will you advice me to do. All nursing post BSN certificate program are online and I will not be able to apply for Visa with it. Please advise me, I don't want to make mistakes of a lifetime. I am working here in Nigeria but the salary is small, less than 600 dollars a month and sometimes government may not pay you 3 months. So that am looking forward to immigration..

Thanks

I have no idea if there is even a paid employment market for a community health educator in any state

Trying to find short cuts can in the end kick you up the backside. If an agency is willing to go the EB3 route then I would stick with them and wait it out. Current processing times for EB3 is 15th Aug 15 which means once your I140 is approved you only wait a short time. However the process of registering with a US state can take up to 6 months and then your agency can apply for EB3 visa. This appears to be your better route than doing a course that really will not benefit you.

So, if I may ask I should just wait and do the licensing registration here in Nigeria and go for Nclex. Or what do advice.

I would just start application process with your state and get NCLEX sorted. As I said if the agency is willing to go the EB3 route then that is the better option for you

I have to tell you changing from F1 to H1B are pain in the neck. I had tried it in the past and none of the employers willing to do it for me. I talked about the one of the well known car company in the world.

If I were you with all nursing experience you claimed you have, I would apply to take NCLEX . As you mentioned someone will help you to go EB3 route. So I would stick with it. I know many American nurses that want to do RNA but couldn't because it is very competitive. ICU experience, GREAT GPA, etc.
