Insurance for Travel Nursing

So the wife is going to start travel nursing. What have yall done for health insurance? Seems like either through her company or personal it's rather expensive. Thanks for your responses in advance!

Health insurance is expensive. You have been shielded from the true cost as staff, but the cost is part of your compensation. So that won't change as a traveler.

Yeah it is pretty expensive. Either through the company she is going to go through or private its 450 a month. And that's just basic healthcare it seems like.

With a huge deductible. Any chance you can carry her on your insurance?

I'm in school at the moment. I'm on her insurance for the present time.

So it will be more than $450. Although if you are not working, you will get a healthy subsidy on the exchange or possible even be eligible for Medicaid depending on the state.

I've always wondered what other travelers do and forget to ask when I happen to work with one. I get migraines a couple times a month, but only ever go to the ER a few times a year (you know, if they've lasted more than 2 days) and each time it's 3-4 thousand dollars and I "have insurance" through my company. It's horrible and the medications are full price too, which for migraine meds that actually work 45% of the time is from $500-$700 a month for 6 doses. Another reason I'm trying to find a staff job....

Just got quoted $660 weekly travel gross pay with furnished housing in Texas and than taking out $318.00 weekly just for medical health insurance for a family of 4. Told the recruiter that is only like $350.00 weekly bring home pay.

In 2009 with only 2 years nursing experience I brought home $1200 weekly traveling with family of 3, apartment furnished/utilities by company, travel/license reimbursement.

Not sure why difference in take home pay both previous assignment & assignment quoted was in Texas!

Currently health insurance through staff job is $220 weekly but that's for medical/dental/vision/STD/LTD/life insurance family with low $1500 family deductible but pay is only $25.22 per hour with 9 years nursing experience working ICU in Texas.

One quote or several? You implied several in your other post. Why Texas?

Again Ned is right, the grand poohbah of this board. I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but if you have to insure a family while traveling, it simply can't be done. If you don't qualify for the tax credit for obamas care, then you are probably hosed. I'm sorry to say that but I tried six ways from Sunday to do it when the kids were young, and ended up placing them on low income state plan for ten bucks each. For a husband and wife I just don't see an answer. I have single plan and a medical savings account that builds pretty fast and makes my taxable income even lower. I'm waiting to have that taken away. I need a nap, I'm just so irked that good hard working folks can't have an option here.

Three different companies. Smaller ones listed on website as the best.
