Hi, I have an interview for a nurse infusion position. I was wondering what the typical patient load is when working 8 hr shifts? Is 15-20 a lot? They said I would have 15 min with established patients and 30 min with new patients. Seems crazy. They also said I may need to stay over without pay if I'm a team player. Sounds crazy.

RED FLAG - You should NEVER stay over without pay. You are a nurse and should always be compensated for your time, even if you have to stay after. I also would not agree to a salaried position because that is how they will get you working extra hours without being appropriately compensated. Furthermore, what would it look like if something happens to a patient and you are off the clock but still the patient's nurse? That just leaves you open to a whole lot of liability.

I declined offer for the job. However, I've been out of nursing for 6 months & nervous I will soon be a "stale" nurse but I also don't want to accept a job if unsafe.

If you are ever worried about becoming a stale nurse, remember you can always find jobs in outpatient care in medical clinics. Safe stuff, not high acuity, and sometimes pay is even more than hospital nursing.
