I lived outside of Tyler from the age of 8 to 22. My parents still live there. It is a gorgeous town. You almost have a hospital district going on, with Trinity Mother Frances Hospital and East Texas Medical Centre and a lot of their clinics being in the same area. You also have UT at Tyler Hospital. For further education, it's good because, not only is there UT, but there's Tyler Junior College as well. You can easily live within a short drive of the city and live in the country (my parents live on 26 acres just South).
Again, very pretty but entirely too conservative for me. My mother's been a LVN for nearly 25 years and has worked at the same clinic for nearly 20 of them. She's maxed out at $18/hr, and last I heard, RNs are around $22-23/hr.
I, too, love Tyler. I grew up in a small town south of Tyler, and almost all of my family lives there. The city is beautiful and growing by leaps and bounds. It's still rural enough, though, to please the old small-town boy in me.
My wife and I are going to relocate from the RGV around June or July, after I graduate from NS and her contract with the hospital here expires, and Tyler is one of the areas we are strongly considering. During a visit in November, we walked through Trinity Mother Frances and were very impressed by the hospital. It was beautiful.
I miss East Texas a lot. Luckily, we got to spend a week or so back up there over the recent holiday. Oh, and it's just conservative enough for me.
