Info regarding tax laws US/Canada

Published

I'm not sure if this question is addressed anywhere else....

I'm planning on going to the US to do travel nursing and then come back to Canada. What are the laws regarding working in the U.S......if I don't want to be taxed twice (in US & in Canada) Is there a mimimum amount of time that I must work so I don't have to declare my earnings in Canada?

Thanks to anyone who can help.

There are multiple threads already on this topic here, just do a search. And no, you are not double taxed on your income.

I believe it has to do with whether you are still considered a "resident" in Canada. For instance, if you keep a house there, the taxman will likely still consider you a Canadian resident. You don't get taxed twice though. Canada and the US have a tax treaty. If you file in both countries you just have to pay the difference to Canada (say Canada says you owe 10K in taxes and you've already paid 8K in the US, you just have to pay Canada 2K). I'm Canadian, but not considered a resident there so I only have to file in the US, unless I work in Canada during that year.

You should go to the Canadian revenue services website, you can call them too

1-800-267-5177 .

Here's how they determine whether you are still a resident or not:

Residency - Individuals

Under Canada's tax system, your liability for income tax in Canada is based on your status as a resident or non-resident of Canada. Residency must be established before your tax liability to Canada can be determined.

Hello,

I was just reading an article on this very subject in a small Canadian publication written by someone who seems to know all the ins and outs. The article was entitled "Tax tips for travelling to the USA" aimed at Canadian travellers to the US. You can find this article online at http://www.mccronehealthbeat.com. It is in the latest (Feb 2006) issue which is free. The person who wrote the article also has a website http://www.traveltax.com.

I am in no way endorsing this service, just thought it may be helpfull to those Canadians who are going to work as travellers in the US.

Hope this helps.

Thank you all for this information..I really appreciate it
