I'm thinking of coming to Canada, Vancouver to work as trained nurse. I can't find any info on wages and would welcome any help/advice.

Is this a good move? Does any one currently have good/bad experiences of vancouver ?

Greetings from Scotland for everyone who may be able to help me!!

YoungGun, how dare you tell the truth and burst a few bubbles!:lol2:

I would hardly say Vancouver is unspoilt. Let's see poverty, homeless people, drug addiction, lack of affordable housing, the list could go on and on but then we wouldn't be promoting the Tourist Boards agenda.

Not every city lives up to its media image. If you are employed and can AFFORD to live there, Vancouver can be a wonderful place. But all it takes is a move to another part of the country to realize that lotus land is not the be all and end all of Canadian cities.

after living in other cities and countries....I think vanouver is my choice for a permanent home to come back to.

It is a beautiful city...sure it is often rainy....but I don't mind that.

It is also the most expensive Canadian city to live in with the highest

housing prices

There is a fair number of homeless and a scary downtown area but what

would you expect? The weather is mild and you are not likely to freeze to death in the winter like you would in alberta. The safe injection sites also probably attract a lot of addicts too

I love the fact that Vancouver is very health and fitness focused...

you will see more people in expensive athletic wear/outdoor gear

than you will see people all gussied up in D &G, gucci, prada etc.

It is also the most convenient city to fly to the orient in Canada.

Love Vancouver....wish we had kept a pied a terre there

I grew up in Toronto, and have lived most of my life here, but for 3 years in Japan, and 2 wonderful years in Vancouver. It's true, Vancouver is a laid back city, where for the majority, people like to make money to DO things, rather than to HAVE things. It's really quite refreshing. But regardless, it is a gorgeous place and I miss it sooooo much (we are back in Toronto where all our families, and our jobs are). I worked at BC Children's Hospital, and it still remains my favourite job of all times. Highly recommend it. Yes, it's true that it DOES rain a heck of a lot, especially from November to March. But, I don't care what people say, it also DOES make a difference as to where in the city you live. We lived in Langley, where it was rainy and overcast A LOT. We then moved to Ladner, and saw the sun tons more. I would sometimes leave for work in the morning and it would be sunny. By the time I got to North Surrey (during my Public Health stint) it was pouring. At the end of the day, I'd come back to Ladner, and it was sunny again. White Rock is the same.

In a heartbeat I'd move back to Vancouver, if not for our kids and all our family here (the ONLY reason we came back to T.O.). And I'd go back to BCCH too.

Hope this helps!

Is it possible for me to work in Seattle for 4 days a week and have my wife work in BC? I don't have my BSN yet(have adn) I have 17 years RN experience as ER,ICU and now Cath Lab. My wife is an urban planner and there seems to be many jobs in BC for planners. Does anybody know the details on working in USA but living in BC. Upon completion of BSN I would seek permant Canadian job.

Hi there,

I'm an RN, trained and currently practicing in Vancouver.

For wages - BCNU.org > go to contracts then provincial contracts then wage grid. 27-35$ / hr depending on experience

as for good and bad...well it really depends on the experience you have. so hard to say just good or bad. every ward is very different, let alone diff hospitals, municipalities, etc. St. Paul's and Vancouver General are the major hospitals in Vancouver and both are generally fairly forward thinking. PM me and i can answer you more specifically.

it's a beautiful city, especially in the summer. lots of outdoor activities nearby. very multicultural.

Great, thanks for that info. Does anyoe know what he different "levels" in BC refer to?
