Inducing vs. Waiting

What would you suggest? I know inducing can cause a long a painful labor & could possibly lead to a c section. So would you suggest to a patient to wait until it happens naturally?

I agree with everyone else. I went to 41 weeks before being induced (which I admit, at the time I just begged and begged to please be induced). I got to 10cm and pushed for 3 hours, never getting past 0 station. I was miserable, exhausted, hurting, and completely over it. Got my belly cut (which I also begged for by that time lol). My baby was only 7lb 14oz 19.5in long, but was acynclitic. Looking back I wish I would've just let nature run it's course, but at the time I just couldn't imagine being pregnant for another second. Babies will come when they are ready to come. As always though, there are definitely reasons that inductions are medically necessary and the probability that I would've been cut anyways was high. I see very successful inductions done practically every day, so I have nothing against it if they are 39+ weeks and have a favorable cervix.

I don't even feel comfortable speaking on induction. The topic makes me sad. I went into labor spontaneously with 2 of mine, but had a scheduled induction with my middle child. His was the only birth that I can truly say was awesome!!!

As a nurse, I think we all know that nature is (usually ) better than medical intervention. But in real life, D/T HMOs and other hospital regs..this may not be the case.

I ended up being induced at 37x4 weeks. But I had severe n/v, couldn't keep anything down then I had a seizure & they admitted me. So my OB thought it was best to induce me. I honestly wish I could've waited until it happened on it's own but maybe next time!

Unless there is a medical reason to do it - pre-E, chorio (in our PPROMers), cholestasis, etc. - then no, I wouldn't recommend an induction. Even the post-dates ones seem silly at just a hair past 40 weeks.

When I went to see my OB during my last pregnancy, he talked about inducing at 40+3 because he'd be on that day. Couldn't really get on board with that one. Fortunately, the little princess came at 39+5 on her own and it became a nonissue.
