Indianapolis Ivy-tech Nursing Program

U.S.A. Indiana

Published

Hello, I have several questions i'm hoping I can get some help with. I have been accepted to Ivy tech Community College-Central Indiana, and I need some help with figuring out the nursing program. I originally applied with the major of Elementary Education but now things have changed. I'm very interested in getting into their nursing program.

To the point, the cut off for the fall program is the day after tomorrow (which I obviously won't be able to make), would there happen to be a spring program coming up in 2010 I can apply for?

Also how does the program work? Pre-reqs - what are they and who has to take them? How long does it take to get into the nursing program, when should I try, and what all/procedures are needed to be taken to be able to officially apply for the nursing program?

You really need to attend an info session (which is required before you apply). You will hear a lot of information there. The next one for Indy (Lawrence campus) is Thursday April 23rd at 1pm. In order to apply for Spring 2010 you would have to have completed Eng 111, Psych 101, A&P 101 and A&P 102 by the end of this summer (application deadline for Spring is Sept. 1st). If you have not taken the A&P's yet, the earliest you could apply is a year from now, for Fall 2010, because you could take A&P 101 this summer and A&P 102 in the fall.

Go to Ivy Tech's website and look up Nursing under Academics to see all the pre- and co-reqs for the program.

So basically you can't test out?

I honestly don't know if you can test out. You might be able to test out of Eng and Psych but probably not the A&Ps. You'd have to ask a nursing chair to find out for sure.

But hmmm, now I'm thinking. . . I went to an info session at Anderson a couple weeks ago and the nursing chair there said something about if you tested out of classes they would only count it as a "C's worth" points for application, i.e. you'd only get 10 pts. for the class (instead of 20 for a B or 30 for an A). For application purposes, for the 4 pre-req classes (eng, psych, the two A&Ps) you get points for your grades in them (30 for A, 20 for B, 10 for C) so if that is true about them only giving you 10 points for a tested-out-of class, you wouldn't want to do that for the 4 pre-reqs because you'd never get in with those points. However, I'm not sure if that is exactly what she was referring to because I wasn't really paying that much attention to that part of the presentation because I knew I wasn't going to be testing out of anything.

csab, you are correct.

If you test out or CLEP out of ENG and PSY they give you a C, which would eliminate you from the RN program, but possibly not the LPN program depending on the campus. My friend was going to do this and that is what the Registrar at the Bloomington campus told her.

Thanks. So what I'm understanding from the pre-reqs listed on the site for the RN program is I must take Anatomy and Physiology I and Anatomy and Physiology II, English Composition, Life Skills Elective, Introduction to Psychology, and then I have to choose one to two from the lists below which has public speaking, the art of geometry, etc. and they're all counted towards my chances of being accepted? I'm assuming they will take me atleast a year and they must all be completed before I apply?

Thanks so much for your help. I'm clueless at this point.

I'll definately be attending a session.

Only English, Psych, A&P I and A&P II have to be completed to apply, and only those four count as far as your chances of being accepted. All the others just have to be completed by the time you'd graduate from nursing school. Most people strive to have most if not all of the other classes done by the time they start nursing school just so that they can focus mainly on nursing classes, plus the nursing classes are very time intensive so it is harder to do other classes along with them. Not saying it's not doable to take the other classes along with nursing, but it would be much harder.

In addition to the four classes, you also have to take the TEAS exam to apply and your score from that is also factored into your chances of getting accepted.

If you take A&P I this summer and A&P II this fall, you could apply to start Fall 2010. However, you could also do A&P I this fall and A&P II next spring (Jan) and also still apply for next fall because they wait for the spring grades before making a decision about fall acceptance since the summer semester is in between. It's not possible at this point for you to apply to start next Jan. 2010 because you won't have A&P II done in time (even if you finish it Dec. 2009, since there is no semester in between that and the Jan. start, they won't take it).

Clear as mud? LOL. An info session would explain everything for you.
