Indiana To Join 31 States In Nurse Licensure Compact

...Hosparus Health government affairs liaison Amelia McClure says the newly signed legislation allows registered nurses to practice in other compact states.

"It really just allows nurses to move freely throughout the states that need them most, it’s also a huge benefit for disaster areas," says McClure.

In emergencies, like flooding, nurses in the compact can respond in neighboring states. Currently Kentucky is the only other border state in the agreement.

McClure says nurses in northern Kentucky will also be able to cross the border to help ease a shortage.

"We have been finding it extremely difficult to staff the necessary positions in rural southern Indiana without the nurse licensure compact," says McClure.

The move will reduce barriers including additional licenses and fees.

Illinois and Michigan have pending legislation to join the compact. Indiana’s new law goes into effect July 1.

I understand if you live in a compact state and have a license in that state, you can work in other compact states. I live in Indiana, but do not have an Indiana license. I work in Ky (compact state). Does my Ky license become a multistate and allow me to work in IN?

Nurse Licensure Compact/Multi-State License

IMPORTANT NEW INFORMATION: Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Indiana State Board of Nursing must delay implementation of the multi-state licensure compact until further notice. All nurses must have an Indiana license to practice in Indiana, regardless of your legal state of residence. If you have questions about this matter, please contact the board at 317-234-2043 or [email protected]

Hi-The compact licensure rules are a little complicated, but here is my understanding of how they work:

  • You must apply for and receive a compact nursing license in the state that is your home state (the state where you have a driver's license, etc.) in order to qualify for "compact" privileges (if this state is a member of the compact)
  • Once this license is approved, you can practice in all 33 compact states with only one license ( Kansas and Louisiana will become compact on July 1, 2019, Alabama will become compact on January 1, 2020, and Indiana is still working on a start date)
  • If you change your legal residence from one compact state to another state that is also compact, you must reapply for a new license in this new state (ASAP). You can, however, still work in this new state with your old compact license, but just until your new license is approved.
  • If your state just became compact, and is not one of the original compact states, you must ask for, and submit the appropriate paperwork and a "compact fee" to get a compact license. This is not automatic. If your state did not previously require fingerprints and a background check for RN licensure, a compact license application does require both of these.
