Incentive pay to work in the ER

Specialties Emergency

Published

I just finished the second day of Bioterrorism training for my ER. The nurses in our department do not get any kind of specialty pay even though we are trained in TNCC, ACLS, BLS, PALS and now Hazmat/Bioterrorism/Nuclear decontamintion. We are drafting a letter to our CEO requesting a $2/hr incentive for specialty pay and I was curious as to how many ER nurses are receiving specialty pay. At this time only the Cath Lab nurses receive this incentive.

Thanks,

Jetman

I was an ICU nurse and didn't get incentive pay for CCRN, PALS, ACLS, IABP, or ABIOMED. But I heard now that our hospital will pay for the CCRN exam and give a $100 incentive if you pass (whoo-hoo). I think some sort of incentive should be given for a national certification that requires 100CEU's (because these are extra classes, not always paid by hospital) like CCRN and I'm sure your emergency national certifications include a large amount of CEUs as well

Actually, on Onco, I have had to wrestle with plenty of drunks. For some reason, most ERs in the area leave the patient dressed (especially if s/he has soiled themselves) and send the up in their clothes for us to handle. I have been maced/pepper sprayed twice by patients sent up by the ER. And have had three needle sticks (one from needle left in gurney, one by needle stolen by junkie downstairs, and one left on patient's person - was not hospital brand so must have come in with the patient from the street).

We ALL deserve hazard pay.

You got me there!

We get extra money for CEN cert. $500 per year...I got $250 when I worked in med-surg and got my Med-surg cert 8 years ago...To be honest with you...I don't mind that I don't get paid for my other certs and skills...I do it for my own personal gain, I do alot of certs and conferences that aren't required by my institution...I just like to learn...if I get paid to do it...its a bonus...but I enjoy learning new things and just trying to better myself and my skills...

I like the idea of incentives for each certification earned, if it's just above and beyond the required. After all, they pay for the required, but certs that are IN YOUR FIELD (I can see some people's lists in my mind's eye right now!) would be appreciated. We're trying to get everyone to do CEN, and my God, it's expensive...about $200. for the first test, then slightly less than $200 for each re-cert! every two years, not including the CEUs required to keep up with all- CEN, ENPC, TNS...ahhh

Yes we ALL should get incentive pay!
