In Search of UK Agencies

Published

I am in search for nursing placement agencies who place American nurses in the UK for temporary work. Does anyone have any recommendations (since there are several out there) in terms of good and bad experiences, excellent packages offered (i.e. pay, accomodations, travel subsidies, etc.)? Likewise, is it suggested to find a company to sign on with prior to starting the NMC application process so that that company can also help with the process (it seems quite lengthy and detailed)? I am looking to work in London during summer of 2006 for a minimum of 3 months so I am looking for a company that offers a lot of assistance with helpful recruiters. Time is a ticking so any info would be great..

time is ticking and not sure if it will go much quicker but can take up to 12 months to go through the process with NMC especially as you know have to do 20 days protected learning before NMC will issue with a number enabling you to work.

Also not sure if you will get any assistance with living expences. found this link which may help http://www.nhsprofessionals.nhs.uk/working-holiday-makers/

good luck

Travel companies for nurses, like we have in the US, do not exist in the UK. There are only agencies for per diem work. And as stated above, it will take you about one year to get your license from the NMC, you can figure on about 18 months before you will have everything completed and a visa that will permit you to work there. There are agencies that offer a two year contract and will help with immigration, but it doesn't speed things up, and you have to sign for the full 2 years. No housing or travel is provided with those either.

Just like nurses from the UK that wish to work in the US, on average it takes at least one year to get things done..............one year is just the wait for the NMC for your license, etc.

I'm somewhat of a nimrod right now...I just finished reading the booklet on the NMC website regarding the application process, the ONP, what is required, etc. However, I'm not quite clear on how to get started. Am I supposed to just send over money to even get the application? And I didn't see any IELTS sites here in the U.S.? I'm a bit confused on how to get the application process started.

I think it is very wrong to ask someone who's first language is english to take the english exam, there should be a way if coming from a recognised country and you had your nurse training in the same country of being exempt from taking this test. I would suggest emailing the address on the website and gain some clafification on this http://www.nmc-uk.org/(gqncaz55mixokmflc5h1fbyw)/aArticle.aspx?ArticleID=1799 I also noticed on this website addresses for the USA http://www.ielts.org

looking on the website you have to pay a evaluation fee and then complete the forms within http://www.nmc-uk.org/(vq2w2x55derxvo55dctjpqja)/aFrameDisplay.aspx?DocumentID=633 These forms have to be completed within 6 months or face another fee, this may be extended for 3 months once.

I wish you well
