In a pickle...

...over the lack of compassion and caring some have regarding chronic pain conditions...

What WILL it take for some to understand that not everyone complaining of pain is a drug seeker?

Sounds like a mother telling her child to suck up the pain during labor because HEY! She did just fine with natural childbirth.

I won't even go on about how subjective pain is. To one person Tylenol is as strong as Morphine. To another, Morphine is as strong as Tylenol.

where's fab4fan guys, there's room at the top of the pile i'm under...

i was sharing a story, something common to this thread...

nice post from a mod, jaded...you left topic, not me

sean

I must have missed something. I didn't realize functioning as a volunteer moderator precludes me from having any opinions of my own or joining in a dsicussion, or starting a discussion for that matter (gee, I did start this thread, didn't I).

No Sean, you weren't sharing your story to exhibit empathy...let's call a spade a spade...you were trying to make a point. I called you on it and pointed it out. Now you're giving me the old "well, you started it...and you're a mod" business?

C'mon...Stevie Wonder could see through all this BS. You have your opinions about pain management...Lord knows you've had you're say...time to let others have theirs.

Nothing wrong w/ a difference of opinion now, is there?

BTW..."good discussion" here.

:D

one should focus one's attention onto the topic at hand, not another member...

bylaw 6.2.a.1...

Is there a "Xanax" thread??

is there a cuddly little dog running around inside my head, reading my thoughts??

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.........

:D

Why, do you oppose the usage of Benzo's for those with severe anxiety?

:chuckle

Dave

LMAO Dave!

Well, back to the topic at hand. What will it take...

For starters, people need to see a loved one die a slow and painful death from lung CA w/ bone metastasis...and have the nursing staff roll theie eyes at you when you attempt to discuss your concerns about the lack of pain management.

That's always fun. It was horrible for me to watch my grandfather die this way. Pain Management has come such a long way...so why are so many healthcare professionals still in the Dark Ages?

Or a mother who was once a vibrant woman with a huge psychiatry practice devlop Fibromyalgia and go to being reliant on someone for even basic care.

Not to mention that she went MANY years w/o pain control. Lack of pain control which led her to take round the clock APAP which now allows her to enjoy a HFP that one of the top ranked Gasteroenterologist in the US even cringes at.

So yea...

Don't get me started :nono: :nono: :nono: :nono: :nono:

this was "the topic at hand" and I didn't stray from it...

you have lept the pain spectrum, and are implying that I want to deny a dying patient meds and you equate that with my little self-secription...

absurd

Sorry I missed your leaping Jaded.

If you decide to leap again, lemme know. On this subject, I'll leap right with you.

:D

Dave

Thanks Dave.

I think you're right about the childbirth analogy you posted earlier. That's how I read it too.

It's funny, we have a chronic pain disease management program where I work. Boy how some nurses groan when a patient in this program calls in. They just don't like to deal w/ them. I think by the time patients reach us, they have been in pain for so long w/o the right management that they are almost deperate for someone to listen to them!

You're soo on the right road Jaded.

What happens is people w/o pain control begin to tell ANYBODY who will listen about their pain. How bad it is. How they NEED HELP! Then, friends and family become alienated. I mean, if the doctor can't/won't/doesn't think anythings wrong, what are they susposed to do!

SOOO the person in pain learns ways they can mask their pain. Had a person tell me the other day that she had Fibromyalgia for over twenty years and her husband didn't know anything about it. Yet she was in severe pain and on strong opioids.

Anyway, once a person learns to mask their pain, not even the best clinician on the planet can tell if they're REALLY in pain. THUS, patients present in HORRIBLE pain, but are treated like seekers (gasp, I said THE word) because they don't LOOK like they're in pain.

It's a horrible cycle for anyone to have to go through.

Dave

Great discussion. I am having a horrible flare right now following TAH/BSO w/ comps. Even having trouble getting my doc who has known me for yrs to help. He doesnt label me a drug seeker just says he doesnt know how to handle it. Makes a person mighty desperate but I would do an illegal drug if I could get one before I would go to er and risk being looked down on. People just dont realize the effect chronic pain has on our lives. I am petrified of going back to work right now my pain is so bad that I can go uptown for small grochery errand and have to come back and set on my heating pad for hours. People just dont get it unless they have been there. It is so dissappointing to from a profession that is suppose to be all about caring and compassion. I say if you want to whine about your so called pain seeker or frequent flyers get your own dang forum. This one is for education, compassion and support.
