In the mind of the elderly

Nurses Humor

Published

  This is a story told to me by another nurse in the LTC setting. There was an elderly woman who was in need of a stool softner who was not wanting to take it. As the nurse tried to persuade the woman to take it, the woman continued to say she didn't need it. Finally the woman asked the nurse how she knew that she needed it and the nurse replied, "because the paper says you do." The woman was beside herself thinking, in her mind, that the nurse was referring to the daily newspaper and that everyone in town now knew that SHE HADN'T HAD A BM IN 3 DAYS. The nurse, of course, was referring to the BM chart "paper".

The horror that went through the elderly lady's mind. We have to watch how we word what we say. :) :) :) :) :) :D

I used to care for elderly Nuns, (most of whom suffered from dementia). One paticular day one of my dear little nuns who NEVER spoke a word, always just sat quitley hands in her lap, not much expression on her face, well it was time for her physical, I assisted the doc, she lay quietly through out the whole ordeal, pleasant and cooperative as usual. I helped the doc roll her over so that he may examine her rectum. He inserted his finger and I nearly died. This quiet nun, who I have never heard speak, got a huge smile on her face and said "Thank you Father".

Both the doc and I were near tears.

ROFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's hysterical, Sun!! I don't know how you made it out of there without busting out laughing. What was this little lady thinking? Too funny!!

The terrible part, was shortly after the nun said this the doc, trying to hold back his laughter says.."I think I just got Promoted".. we were both trying so hard to hold it in...we made it about half way up the hall before we really let loose. I loved that doc,,, really laid back thought nothing of staightening me out as for I had doubled over...and reminded me that he loved his job....good guy.

~makes ya wonder about those catholics!!

As the daughter of an elderly LTC resident (due to a stroke a year ago) I want you all to know how much I appreciate those of you who work LTC with love and patience. It broke my heart when I could not bring mom home to live with my family, but she gets excellent care and knowing that makes her being in "a home" much easier for me. So my thanks to all of you. (and yes I do let her care givers know I appreciate them.:)

I was working LTC several years ago, and will always remember walking a patient down a hallway. She only needed an arm to hold onto so she could maintain her balance. This patient rarely spoke, but when she did, it was always good! This patient's sense of humor was awesome. Poor gal was all wrinkles, head to toe..apparently she had been quite heavy in her younger days, and had lost a great amount of weight, leaving all the wrinkles behind.

Well, as I was walking this patient down the hallway, I said "Jane, will you be my date??" to which she looked up at me, smiled, and said "no, but I'll be your PRUNE!" I about busted a gut right along with the patient. LOL :D  :D

That patient was so danged cute, I'll never forget her!

;)

While acquainting myself with a new elderly patient, I asked, "How long have you been bedridden?" After a look of complete confusion she answered, "Why not for about twenty years-when my husband was alive."
