In-home health care

Published

Has anyone done this while going to school?

I'm entertaining the thought because we're broke and we have no health insurance. Plus I figure it'll give me a little bit of experience. I'm also considering graveyard shift -- it's more in demand supposedly and fits best with my dh's schedule (meaning no daycare which we can NOT afford with three kids not in school yet).

What can anyone tell me about in-home health care? What sort of things can I expect to do, to learn? How's the pay, benefits, work environment?

Thanks in advance!!

Do you want to work as a CNA or LPN??? Anyway, my Mom worked in home-health for a while and she loved it!!! She told me that in her experience it depends on the client. If you get a good client who treats you like you are human rather then a slave plus someone is there to help you lift and move the client/patient, then it is a good arrangement. Good luck. :nurse:

Actually, I'd only be able to start as a non-medical health care aide. I'll be going for my CNA next semester and would then be able to apply for positions which required that.

Specializes in been there done that - specialty peds.

I have worked in home care and am going back to it. I agree it depends on the clients that you are working with - some can make you or brake you. It is nice because you can make it work around your schedule (depending on who you work for) I am currently working for myself and it is great. I can not afford day care either but having the flexibility makes it easier so that my husband can watch our son when I am going to work and grad school. The pay is dependent on your degree and who you work for. There are a lot of variables in this case. You need to really look at different places and compare them and ask a lot of questions - the only dumb question is the one that you didn't ask (drilled in my head from previous professors). Good Luck in finding what you are looking for.

I've been looking into it, too. The pay doesn't seem all that great (at least around here) compared to what you can make at an entry level position in a hospital as a Unit secretary or something like that with similar hours.
