Hello All :)
The BSN program that I am trying to get into is requiring good grades, a competitive score on the TEAS as well as an impromptu essay. I have already applied one time and was denied and one of the reasons was my essay. My essay was week and apparently it did not answer the question adequately. I attended a writers workshop already and the teacher had asked us to think of all the possible topics that the school might ask to write about. I have thought of a few topics but I am just looking for others to perhaps give me some insight on what questions were asked of them. The questions I have thought of are as follows:
1) Why do you want to become a nurse?
2) Where do you see yourself in your nursing career in the next five years?
3) Explain the importance of nursing in today's society?
4) Where do you see yourself specializing in while being a nurse?
5) What are the most important issues nursing is facing today?
I only get 1 hour to type out the essay and I want to say the length is no more than 500 words. I know that I have to spend time just to get the structure of the essay established. I just want to be as prepared as possible for whatever topic the school decides to throw at me. I want this so bad. Thanks all for the help :)

I think I'm a little confused. How do you get an "impromptu" essay? You apply to a school and either get rejected or accepted. Are you trying to say you can get preliminarily accepted and only fully accepted if they actually like your essay? If so, pass.

Several of the community colleges in my area accept applicants based on a points system. The first round of points include prereq grades, experience, and other discretionary points. The top X number of people are invited to participate in a proctored essay. The points for the essay are then totaled with the prerequisite points and top students are accepted. It looks like this poster just has the added bit of totaling TEAS scores as well.
Yes the college that I am trying to get into is based on a points system as well. The tally of points is based off of grades, the TEAS and a timed essay. Unforunately another part I forgot to mention was that the attempts at applying are also weighed in....like I only get three times to apply to this program and that is it. I am hoping that will change sometime in the near future. So yes the essay is one hour long and they just give individuals a random question, mostly pertaining to nursing, and I have to write about it. I wish i could have an essay that I could solidify by knowing the question ahead of time...but sadly this is not the case. I just need ideas as to what the proctors might ask.
What is stressful is the cohorts for this college are only 20 seats....very very competitive.
Is this for a community college? If so, have you looked into BSN? Are you only interested in this one program? If so, why?
No this is for a private college and yes this is for a BSN. I chose this college because it is accelerated and I have heard that their passing rate for the NCLEX was over 90% in all of their school sites. I want to go through this program because I want to move up the clinical ladder and advance in my career in the smartest and fastest way possible. There are other programs but they are lottery based which I don't like....I don't want to wait three years to get in.

Why don't you write a practice essay for each of the 5 topics you've given us? Spend some time on them, making sure you've structured the essays well and shown critical thinking. There's a good chance you'll see a question very similar to the ones you've mentioned. If not, then you've already applied critical thinking and practiced structure on 5 essays, which will help you frame your test essay if it's a completely unrelated topic.
Perfect practice makes perfect.
