Imperial Valley College?

U.S.A. California

Published

I tried looking for a thread on this college, but only found one dead thread about it, so I decided to make another one hoping to attract people who holds any knowledge about Imperial County or Imperial Valley College.

Help me out please ... I'm so grateful to be accepted, but I know adjusting to a new environment will be kind of difficult since I grew up in San Diego. Also, what is the program like ?

Also, I had a concern.

Imperial's NCLEX pass rates are not very high and it kind of scares me. I don't know if it's the program that's not that great or it's just the students.

Thanks in advance.

no one goes here ?? or is going here ?? :(

I am going to apply...how long did it take you to get in?

Was there a waitlist?

It's a very interesting place. If you love the humidity and heat then Imperial County it is. Right now that winter is approaching, it's going to get cool. March-November is pretty hot. There really isn't much to do out there so therefore you either cross the border or drive about 130 miles east to San Diego.

Imperial Valley College is located in between Brawley and El Centro along Highway 111 and it's out in nomads land. My cousin went to nursing school out there. Back in the 1990's she claimed it to be a very good nursing school, but the area was just dead. There are more applicants than spaces available, but it's not as hectic to get into as the Bay Area, San Diego, or Los Angeles area. I hope this helps

Thank you guys for responding to me!! I almost feel like no one goes to that college because I barely see a thread on Imperial Valley's nursing program.

My boyfriend and I applied this September and we both got in for Spring 2009. I know, crazy huh ? I was seriously like giving up because I got rejected from so many schools this year and I was just thinking about what I was going to be doing next semester ... or even, next year since I pretty much finished all my G.E's and what not.

75% are those who got picked based on grades and the 25% got picked based on the lottery. I have to admit, I was a little skeptical. I remember when Copper Mtn College told me that I didn't get in for the VN program, but I was on the waitlist with a bunch of other people. And if I showed up, I could take anyone's spot who didn't show up for the first or second day. On that day, It was basically ... just my boyfriend and I who showed up that day, that were from the waitlist, and we were so surprised. One of us could have gotten in because there was one open seat, but we both decided not to because my mom was dead set on not letting me go because she didn't like the environment there. I was really surprised to see only the two of us from the waitlist. With so many impacted programs, I was expecting to see a lot of people there hoping to get a seat! So when the letter from IVC came around, imagine what I was thinking when I saw it .. and I knew that my boyfriend and I are going to the same program at the same time!

Of course, I would really like to think that my prayers [that have been going on for a good year now] finally came true lol =)

I haven't been to the area myself and we're planning on taking a drive over there soon to check the area out, so I'm a little nervous seeing it in person. I read up as much as I could about the county and asked a lot of questions online to those that are familiar with the place. With their help, I don't feel that scared about moving there. I guess not having a lot of distractions around [like how San Diego is] will probably help me focus a lot more on my studies. I'm sorry, I sound like such a typical teenager ... but I'm glad there's a decent mall there, lol. To me, it makes me feel like the area isn't THAT under developed in my mind.

I'm really excited for orientation and I hope my future classmates and the locals I meet will be friendly and inviting :icon_hug:.

-- but I would like to add that I'm a little nervous about their pass rates ... Don't know if it's the program or the students there. I know that as long as I study hard, it shouldn't affect me ... but at the same time, I can't help but worry if the program isn't as great as it used to be or something.

I joined this forum just to get in on this post. I too would like to know about the nursing program there. I'm from San Diego too and I'm applying for Fall and I just found out how low the scores were. Did some googling after seeing this post and they got a new dean for nursing so maybe the test scores will be better? Here's the post. My girlfriend has family there and they say its their best program but how is their best program producing such poor results? I wonder if its worth it instead of being waitlisted or denied at other programs(that is if I even get accepted here.) I've always been a good test taker so will it even matter?

According to Imperial Valley College they are on ne of the best in the nation. I still doubt that. Our community has a large number of students who want to join the nursing program. last I heard only 25 people were being chosen by lottery each semester after having passed some entrance exam. Then again a lot of people take forever to join because of the prerequisites here in The Imperial valley the schools are not all that great and so people start at remedial courses. There are those who enter at the right level and just spend one semester doing prerequisites and apply but still have to be on a waiting list. The Best thing I can say to you is to call the school it self and find out the current process to apply.

The Imperial Valley is growing very much, it is hot and humid here in the summer but we have great winters. Some are right there is not much to do here but we have Mexicali just accross the border with culuture rich place. The imperial valley is a quiet community of about 8 cities, one college, one university sdsu-iv campus.

Any new updates on this school?

what kind of updates do you want? www.imperial.edu thats the schools website. It accepts 25 new students each semester and there are hundreds who want in. Also the students are chosen by lottery of those who pass the test required to enter the program.

Just wondering on how the program is going so far. I would likely be getting in on advanced placement once someone drops or flunks out(If anyone does...), im in for 3rd semester. Also wondering if anyone had any trouble getting into an accredited BSN school after IVC also... Since I've looked and see no listing of it being accredited by anything but the BON

Update about Imperial Valley College... It is a good college, and it has an accredited and well recognized nursing program. I tryly recommed this nursing program. Though, is very hard to be accepted to the program, do to the long waiting list and pre-requisite classes, new requirements, and pre-admission to the program test. Some new pre-admission requirements are that you must have not a lower grade than a "B" in all of your English classes and Biology (before it used to be a "C" or better). On rest of the classes its still the same ( "C" or better). And like i said before, now you must take a test of evaluation for pre-admission.

I wish you all good luck with your goals! And i hope this info was helpful!:)

I finally graduate from their nursing program. I am very sorry to say, but the program SUCKs bigtime.

fisrt of all, the instructor do not instruct students at all, they just give you a book and tell you to learn it all because everything is importan. they dont comunicate between them or the students and they dont give a crap about the student. they blame the stdents for everything and make you feel stupid and students will alway be wrong. no wounder IVC passing grades are so low. they just dont instruct. student spend most of their time figuring out what to study intead of focusing on the important stuff. Really if you have other options... go to other college. this one sucks , sucks, sucks.
