I'm 53 and want to be an LVN (Clock is ticking)

Am I nuts?

I think I would be a very good student and am at a time in my life when I can devote a lot of time to studying. Do you think I could get accepted into a nursing program?

Healthwise, I have very good control (using meds) of high blood pressure. I'm overweight, but working on reducing that.

I've raised six children and although I don't have a college degree, I do have 60+ college credit hours with a grade point average of 3.7 - before grade inflation. haha

Frankly, I was thinking of doing a phlebotomy course because I am so ready to get out of the house and do something, but nursing has always interested me.

I'm going to go for it, but realistically what are my chances of getting in? (Assuming I have good TEAS scores?)

Thanks. I look forward to "hearing" from someone who's been there.

My problem with doing the ADN program is that it will take well over two years just to get a couple of pre-reqs and meet the early deadline for admissions. Deadlines roll around at weird times, imo, for the two programs I'm interested in. It would take at least four years before I could complete a two year program.

I prefer the "insurance" of having an LVN and then doing the LVN-ADN, especially since I don't mind doing LVN work in a LTC facility. My grandmother has been in one for a few years, and I'm aware of the working conditions. In fact, I just had a long talk with her LVN yesterday.

Be sure to do your homework on the LVN-ADN bridge. In my area I called several nursing programs and their bridge programs only support college level courses. Here in Savannah the LPN program does not have college level courses, so they do not transfer for the ADN program. I was very discouraged, then just jumped in and got to work on my college level pre-req's. I have already put off going back to school for 20 years, I just didn't want to spin my wheels in the wrong direction. I hope this helps.

Thanks! Yes, I'm aware of that. I already have the non-science courses needed (and a lot more than that LOL) , but will need the science pre-reqs. I plan on taking a year to finish those while I (hopefully) work after getting my lvn. I think it will be very do-able.

If I was you I would just try and get into RN school. So many of the hospitals are not using LVN or LPNs that much. Since you have the time just go ahead and enroll in RN instead of LVN I know you will not regret it. After your year of training, you can do a travel assignment LVN travel assignemens are slim to none, because of the expense and also RN have to co-sign their work so hospitals don't want to pay out that kind for money for a travel LVN. You'll find that 2 years will fly by fast. I have my BSN so since you are not 53 get your 2 yr Rn will still be acceptable. God Bless you on your endeavors:yeah::)

She'll be 52 whether in school or not!! I love your Aunt! I will also be 52 when I finish my RN program. (If I pass this TEAS test this month)

GO for it! I have made such good friends with some sweet young future nurses. A couple of them that I took pre-reqs with, are like additional kids to me.

This is something I always wanted to do but life swayed me temporarily other directions. Good luck!

It's irritating when older students act arrogantly to the younger generation. Dont do that, and you 'll be fine.

hi, i think you should go for it. i am 57, and i plan on going back for nursing career. don' t know if anyone would hire 'old nurse' though, but heck i'll give it a try. couldn't do it when i was a housewife saddled with children. glad to find some kindred spirit here!

Well, this "old nurse" got hired and was 58 when I WAS hired! Never never too late....have faith in yourself and your abilities, and HR will too!!:nurse:

Punch, you gave me hope. I just dont know if i should start by being a CNA then working myself toward a nursing degree, either a LVN, or LPN. I am thinking of vocational school instead of traditional CC? any thoughts?

I congratulate you on your desire to become a nurse! I was 50 when I entered the LPN program prerequisite classes at our local vocational school. I was able to devote the time and energy to studying because I had no children at home and graduated with a 3.8. Went on to get my RN and have been working ever since. I loved taking the classes and the friendships I made were invaluable to me! I know you can do this if you put your mind to it. Age is just a number so don't let that number stop you! Good luck!

I am 52, I will be done in 5 weeks. YEAH!!!
