IM Vitamin K & filter needles

Just wondering...

Do you use a filter needle to draw up Vitamin K from glass ampules and then change the needle before giving the medication IM to newborn babies?

Specializes in Case Mgmt; Mat/Child, Critical Care.

We use filter straws as well. In the past when filter needles/straws weren't available, I would break open the ampule, withdraw med w/larger guage needle, then transfer new needle onto syringe. Not great, but the best I could do to avoid picking up fragments.
