I'm teaching HS students via my nsg degree

I applied for a school nurse position, and to make a long story short, I got a job teaching health science technology to high school students. I love, love. love my new job. I got the best of both worlds. I do PRN nursing in the hospital to supplement my income as a teacher (which isn't bad considering I work 187 days a year as a teacher), and I get off for the holidays. My family is going skiing during Christmas and to BC for spring break. We take long weekends and have mini-vacations close to home. This just wasn't possible when I was working full-time in the hospital. The students and co-workers have respect and see me as a professional. That's totally different than my experience in the hospital. Is there anyone else out there doing what I'm doing? I told the school district that if more nurses knew about this job there probably wouldn't be a shortage of health science teachers. I just happened upon it. There are requirements to getting this position. In Texas, you have to have a bachelor's degree, a minimum of three years exp in your profession and go through an alternative certification program (which I'm almost finished with).

Congratulations on your new job. That sounds like the best of both worlds for me also. I am going to school for my bsn in nursing, but I have always been lured to teaching. Who knows, maybe that will be in my future some day too. Thanks for sharing and good luck to you!

I've checked into it here in Florida also. Similar to Texas must have a BS and attend a certification course. They stated I could teach Health Sciences and First Aid Courses for all grades.

Congrats to finding a job you love. My mom did that for a few years and loved the job but the program wasn't run very well in her school. Like you said it worked out well for her having a job she loved and also being able to take family vacations and such.

Congrats! You have my ideal job! I taught middle school before getting accepted into nursing school; with my nursing degree, I'd like to return to the school setting and teach or become a school nurse. That won't be happening for a while since it sounds like NC's requirements are the same as yours in TX. Best of luck!

A friend of mine did school nursing PRN to fill in & she said be prepared for lots of drama. Kids would come into the nurses' office, hand clasped to forehead, with lots of heavy sighing saying, "My head feels like it's going to explode!" And she would reply, "My, that would be messy."

OK, I know that it could be a bleed, tumor, migraine, etc, but these were not the case here.....
