Hi everyone,
I am new to this site & don't know where to post my thread. If this is a wrong forum please excuse me & if possible kindly answer my question.
I'm an overseas nurse from philiphines, got RN one month ago. we (myself & my husband) living in Kansas state. i got married 1 year ago & came here. before that i was working in philiphines & UK (3 years), got total 7 years of Neuro surgical ICU. Now i passed NCLEX-RN, CGFNS, IELTS & received my RN from Kansas board of nursing last week.
I'm 2-3 months pregnant now. Is that possible to get a job when i'm pregnant or is there any restrictions. I really need a job. So kindly tell me am i eligible to work as a RN in kansas & which hospitals will you suggest for me. Because as i said earlier, i'm new to this country, state & the hospitals. And one more question i didn't work for an year, because of visa problems & exams. everything cleared now. Is there any problem in getting a job due to this one year break period?
Please give me some ideas.
Thanks in advance.
Sherry.

I don't think it will be an issue -- if you are thin enough to hide it during the interview. From what I understand, you are not required legally to disclose that you are pregnant and once they hire you they aren't allowed to fire you because of it. (They will probably be less inclined to fire you than someone who isn't pregnant because of fear of lawsuits.) I was just hired recently and THREE of the nurses in our group going through orientation are pregnant. Two knew and one found out soon after.

I definitely don't think it would be much of an issue. I got a job while I was pregnant with my daughter. However, keep it mind, it is only fair to let your new (or potentially new) employer that you are expecting within the next 6-7 months so they won't run into a major staffing issue upon your break. Also, being a nurse while pregnant can be strenuous on your body so don't over exhert yourself!
But good luck with everything, I'm sure everything will work out for the best!

It is illegal to ask you if you are pregnant it is up to you whether or not you wish to divulge that information. But after you are hired you may want to tell them so you can avoid working on units that could be hazardous for you and your child.
As far as the break in your work history I have filled out some applications that asked me to explain any gaps in employment. But it sounds like you have a good reason for not working during that time.

I started a new job early in my pg, and I didn't disclose that information. I only kept the job 5 mos, because I needed to go on bed rest. I did give them 2 weeks notice. I didn't like the job anyway, so it was a blessing to be able to leave. Congrats, and I wish you all the best! :)
Dear friends,
Thank you so much for all of your response. Now i got some hope that i will get a job & i'm very happy.
Thanks specially to firstyearstudent,AdrienneRN, SW 07 & RN mom of 2.

Believe me, you can get a job. A GN on our floor was hired with less then 3 weeks to go. Plus she was ok'd for full FMLA too. Just have to finish her orentation when she returns in 10 weeks.

Congrats! As other posters have said they cannot discriminate based on your being pregnant. They cannot ask you questions regarding family and, if they do, you are under no obligations to answer them. Just keep in mind that your employer does not have to grant FMLA (family medical leave) if you have been employed there less than 12 months. That means that they are not required to hold your position or move you into a similar position after your maternity leave. Best of luck with everything.

Sherry:
Yes...u can get a job...they can not discriminate against pregnancy. However, I would hurry....you have 3 months probation before your benefits kick in....and you will be covered most likely 100% if you deliver in the hospital you work in. Cost a lot to deliver nowadays...
Good luck!
