I'm looking for a GN/RN posintion in L&D

Published

Hi guys,

I will be graduating in December 2008 and definitely want to go into L&D but am not having much luck finding hospitals that have GN/RN L&D internships available to start with. My goal is to go straight from school into L&D. I was wondering if anyone new any hospitals in the DFW area that might have more opportunities. Also if I'm not able to get into L&D right away where is the best area to try to start, for easy transition into L&D, and one more question, how long do you usually have to work in another area before you can transition into L&D?

Thank you.:)

Specializes in L&D.

Mother/Baby would be a great place to start...many hospitals will hire new grads for this. Me....I did Neuro/Trauma for 9 months, then home care for 6 months....My two year anniversary for L&D is in a few days! I am greatful for the experience I received in med/surg, although I always said I wouldn't do it when I was in nursing school. But I DID enjoy it there and learned so much. Good luck to you!

:confused::confused:

sorry...yes! I loved Parkland :) It was quite different from anywhere else I've been. Autonomy...well...not so much-mainly because there were sooooo many med students/residents there that were very eager to be involved and therefore made most of the decisions regarding care. From what I hear it's a pretty tough to get into any of their residency programs because it's such a popular place to start. but if you get the chance you will see it all!

Thanks so much! I have been offered positions in both their L&D and NICU residency programs, and I am so torn on what to do because I love both areas, and ultimately would like to be cross-trained in both. This is by far the hardest decision I have ever had to make! Both would be such amazing learning opportunities! By any chance did you rotate through the NICU? If so, what did you think of it, and the people there? Thank you sooooo much for your thoughts!

yeah, I spent a day in nicu...not enough time to see or do too much. The RNs there were warm and friendly. Congrats on the offers-I can't wait to be in your shoes :)

Thank you so much, You will be there soon!:)
