they now make all nurses take a pre-employment physical no matter what area you work in at most hospitals. It is standard, and required for hire. Very easy, nothing to worry about.

How long did it take you to find a new job? I am in a similar situation, and misrable. I feel trapped. I have less than a year of experience so that really limits where I can go, but if I stay where I am, I will go crazy:(

OMG, I have always wanted to do the same thing!!!! I have just started a job in a NICU in Texas (and I am already learning so much!), however, I too, would like to be a WHNP,CNM, and work in labor and delivery as well as the nicu in the future. Good Luck!

I take the NCLEX Jan 20th. I have been trying to study a little each day (2-3hrs.) and do lots of practice questions. I took the HURST review too. Im so nervous It makes me sick to my stomach just to think about it...:/

OMG, trying to find somewhere to live has been the biggest headache! I live in fort worth now, so it sucks to have to move, however the pay at parkland is a lot better than fort worth. I found some apartments called The Madison at Cedar Springs and they are only 5 min from parkland, and allow you to bypass traffic. the price is really comparable to fort worth apartments too, and they are in a nice part of town. There are also some really nice townhomes that are right off the tollway (exactly 15min from parkland) and are priced really well for dallas, (about what a townhome would cost you in ft. worth) called the reserve luxury townhomes on montfort. It really all depends on what you want, how much you want to spend, and how little you want to drive. Ive looked a lot on craigslist, you might want to try that

I got offered a job in Parkland's NICU too, and just recently accepted it! The user finally40 (i think thats right) works there, and told me a lot about the program. She really helped to convince me to accept it. Where all are you considering? If you put in the topic Parkland hospital, or parkland NICU some of the stuff she wrote about it should show up! I hope you decide to come too!

I work at JPS as an extern in L&D right now, and I can honestly say it has been the best hands on experience that I could ask for. It is VERY busy, so be prepared to work HARD, however, you will learn ALOT! I have worked there for almost a year, and I love it there. However, be aware that it is a different type of population, and more days than not you see the ugly and sad side of L&D. If you are judgemental then JPS is not the place for you, however, if you believe that all patients desearve the best care no matter what their life choics are, then you will have an awesome experience. Great nurses, great doctors, great experience.

to PV101, I am an extern in Labor & Delivery now, so I was able to put that on my resume, and I included all other health care related jobs that I have had as well. So, I guess if you have relevant experience include it, but if not I am sure that's okay too

I am not sure what the atmosphere is like, but I applied for the OB internship and got offered a position, but actually ended up accepting a position in their NICU (which is just crazy considering I have planned to work in their L&D for forever!!!) however, I will say that the people I interviewed with in both areas were so nice! Everyone in the L&D department was warm and welcoming, and deciding to go to a different area was the hardest decision I have ever made. No worries though, I plan to cross train, so I can work in both areas! but, I would just say be yourself, and come prepared with your resume and some backround info on the hospital!

Well guys, just a quick update.... I officially turned down the position at childrens, and l&d at parkland. It was heartbreaking. This week I make my final decision about parkland's NNICU. I have one interview left on thursday, and I still have to tell my boss (where I am an extern) that I will not be working there when I graduate. This is going to be so hard!! I am 98% sure that Parkland's NNICU is where I'm headed, however, I am scared that I won't be good at NNICU nursing. (its a bit intimidating). Also, what I love about L&D is that you never know what can come through the door. Things can go from perfectly fine to an emergency at the drop of a dime, and I love the adrenaline rush that comes with that. I hope that I still am able to find that excitement with the NICU, and that I stay busy there (I HATE being bored!), but hopefully with Parkland having 107 bed NICU boredom wont be a problem. I am going to be so sad leaving the labor and delivery department that I work on now, however, the pay there is the worst out of all the hospitals in the area, and I have an unreal amount of loans to start paying off. Needless to say, its gonna be a hard and emotional week, so please keep me in your prayers. Gosh I never thought graduating would be so bittersweet! Thanks again for all your suggestions and encouragement guys! It has helped me more than ya'll will ever know!

Thank you all so much for the feedback! The crazy thing is, the training program at Children's sends you through Parklands residency training program! You start off with all of Parkland's residents, and then when you are done with your residency you go back over to Childrens. On the one hand, I feel as though if they are just going to send me to Parkland anyway for training, then I might as well stay there.... however, having nice benefits and nice people to work with would be awesome too (at childrens). uhhh, this is the hardest decision ever!! Children's unit is a 16 bed (they will be expanding to 36 next year) level III NNICU where mostly they do surgeries and then send the babies back to their original hospitals. Basically a PACU for babies. Parkland on the other hand is a 107 bed level III unit that is equiped to do surgery if necessary, and has a whole spectrum of things to choose from. Children's is brand new and state of the Art. Parkland has more variety then anyone could ask for, and the oppertunity to float through high acuity to growers and feeders on any given day. Both are teaching hosptials. this decision is complicating life right now!!:) But I am so very thankful to have choices and options! Thank you all so much once again!
