Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Well today my boyfriend got laid off from his job so basically I'm the sole provider now until who knows when since the economy has fallen severely. I was wonding if and one is taking their prerequisites online or going to regular classes while working a full time job? I work 3-11 mon-fri and I'm really upset by the fact it may take me awhile before I can stary school especially after all the crap I went though to get all my documents that were 1000 miles away. Where did you find study time and how many classes a semester did you take? Was it online or in an actual class? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I work full time (M-F 8-4:30) and am married (no kids) - I'm taking 15 units this semester, four classes (full time status), including Anatomy and Chemistry. It looks like I'm going to end up with a 4.0. Next semester I'm going to take Phys and Micro along with another class or two. Last semester, I took 15 units and worked full time, but it was easier because I had no science classes. It's a lot of work and kinda annoying, but I still manage to have a lot of free time on the weekends. I take my science classes at school and non-science classes online if they are available. Online classes make a big difference. It's definitely doable.

Thank you soooo much for your info. Although its still hard I don't even know if I can afford the internet at my house.

I know what you mean. My husband works in a WaMu office so his job is in danger right now, we have no idea what's going to happen with his office, but we will find out in a month. I hate the economy.

So do I. I'm sitting here trying to figure out how I'm going to pay all the bills, my checks are less than rent. I was thinking about taking out loans I know a few people said they did that while in school to pay their bills.

If I were you, I'd channel all your energy into helping your bf find a new job. I know the market is terrible right now, but being really aggressive about it can help. My checks are also less than our rent, and I know that if my husband gets laid off we're gonna have to figure something out fast, even if it means he finds a transitional job that isn't very great.

Would you be able to afford just one class? It's better than none at all and it will get you to your goal (eventually). You could also get a job at a hospital and have them pay for your degree. That's what I'm trying to do. I've taken an online class through my local community college. It is easier, but not cheaper for me. They charge extra for the online classes. You have to make sure that you have a really good Internet connect and a reliable computer--or at least access to both. My teacher showed the lectures as little videos, and we had to take tests online. Plus, we had to comment regularly via our school online system.

Have you filled out the financial aid form? I'm assuming you don't have another degree. In that case, you may qualify for grants and loans. You don't have to pay back grants. Some hospitals will pay off your loans. Are you at a community college or university? In most cases, you can take the community college classes for much cheaper than the university, and your classes can usually be trasferred to the university if you want to finish your degree there.

Good luck!

I personally would never support someone who wasn't my lawfully wedded husband. I've seen too many women give up their dreams for guys, then end up with nothing.

Is he going to get unemployment? I got laid off in March, and my unemployment has actually been able to tide us over with a few budget cuts (oh, and crappy insurance).

Nursing is a good career, especially in this economy- I would do whatever it takes to get through sooner rather than later. How much time do you have left?

I lived on loans through my first degree, and while it's not ideal, it *is* something that would have more of a payoff for nursing than it did for my degree (English). I would hit up your school's financial aid office- maybe there are grants and scholarships you are eligible for too. Look in to the federally subsidized Stafford loan and the unsubsidized Stafford loan. Can you guys look for a less expensive place? Pack more lunches?

Also, my state has a website devoted to local job listings and it has some information on training programs and workforce retraining for people who have been downsized from specific industries.

Online classes are good because they are flexible in when you can do the work during the week, but I found myself spending what seemed like a lot of time with my online class- I think largely because I get so easily distracted on the internet though. This just happened today, but once the dust settles you might find you have a few options open to the two of you that you aren't aware of right now.

I'm at a community college right now but I don't have internet I'm not sure I can afford it yet. My boyfriend supported me for 5 months because I didn't have a job so I'm not going to abandon him the plan was I'd go part time at my and he pay the bills so I can focus more on school and be a full time student. I appreciate the support, luckly my school has weekend classes available so I know I can at least take 1 class

My husband and I took turns supporting each other before we were married. No one here knows anything about your relationship, so don't feel like you have to defend yourself on that front. Besides, we all know that being married isn't a guarantee against giving things up for nothing.

Thanks, I appreciate your comment
