I'm not quite an ER nurse yet (hopefully i'll get the job) but I was hoping that some of you ER nurses who love your job could help complete that phrase...
I also like (don't think I'm crazy) not getting too emotionally involved with my patients.
nope...dont think this is crazy at all...I have a few I get attached to, but I really like not taking every one of them home with me. I think if I had to care for them day in and day out I would be emotionally drained.
I am an ER Nurse and I LOVE my job because,,,,,
I love getting pooped on, peed on, puked on, bit, hit, and kicked. Cussed at, and called every name in the book. I love getting blood on my feet, in my hair, on my face, and in my clothes. I love having bodly secretions thrown at me from across the room. I love being an ER nurse to be told, "That medicine does not do crap, and that I have to have oxycodone. it is the only thing that will help releive the pain of my hang nail"! I love being an ER nurse because I love to listen to how they lost the supply of narc's that they got just yesterday, and how they need more RIGHT NOW!
But if the truth be told the real reason that I LOVE BEING AN ER NURSE is that I can make a difference in another humans life, no matter how small it may be, if it is only a smile for a breif second, I have made a difference in that persons life, made them smile in the face of a very bad experience. Showed the a little caring and compassion. I have showed them that someone cares, and is there to help them when they are most in need.
I can and do make a difference every shift that I work, and that is why I love my job!
Peace Out,
Dan
I'm NOT an ER nurse (and in fact am a student) and only spent one day in the ER in clinicals, but...
Seeing my preceptor look at a pt, decide what the pt needed, do it, and then ask the attending to write the orders after the fact, and have the attending do it and compliment the nurse on his judgment. That? Was awesome.
Were it not for the fact that my joint problems precluded my working with adults, I'd work in the ER in a heartbeat.

Of course I like knowing I'm helping people on one of (for the most part) the sickest and probably worst days of their lives. For all that I complain about the "whiners" and the "whiner's familes" I really like providing care to those who genuinely need it.
And, truth be told, there is NOTHING like standing in the trauma bay with your gown and gloves on when you have a serious trauma 5 mins. out and guessing what it will be and anticipating the plan of care...except when they roll them in. PURE adrenaline...
