Basically the one thing that has kept me from persuing a nursing degree is that I am bad in Math. Its just anything higher than basic Algebra,I have a hard time with.

The thing with about Math and me is that if I put my time into studying,I will do good. Not true with Math,it seems that no matter how hard I study I still do poorly.I am going to browse the boards and read the Math related posts.

Has anyone else who has problems with Math overcome them and completed their degree and how did you do it?

FlipFlop,

I talk to you on PM, but just to remind you (as long as they do the same thing they did for us first semesteR), they SAY it's a test, but they just give you the paper and say to do it on your own, and if there's anything you DON'T get, learn it.

The test is so easy @ our school, and I absolutely sucked in math before now, but have only gotten one math question wrong.

YES ! YES! YES! With the extra help I received from an intructor I passed with flying colors... I am lacking very basic math skills. My family was going through alot of turmoil during those really formative years due to illness-I also had a lengthy illness and missed alot of school-I never really caught up and became almost phobic. My palms sweat,I start to shake,my skin gets cool and clammy and I'll start to feel weak and dizzy.....What a mess-I almost walked out of class the first day when I saw what was required of me-but with some tutoring I got it....you will also.....

...the math really boils down to four basic formulas and if you just memorize them, and its not too hard, you are good to go...

Interesting, would you mind sharing those 4 formulas?

Yes, Coopergrrl, please explain the four formulas!

Sure!

1. Daily fluid requirement formula:

First 10kg X 100

second 10kg X 50

rest of kgs X 20

2. Safe medication dose formula:

Multiply weight by safe dose and compare to med order.

3. Flow rate in drops per minute:

multiply amount of solution in mLs by drop factor and divide by time in minutes.

4. FLow rate in mL/hr:

divide amount of solution by time in hours.

I know this simplifies it and you do have to have the basics of dimentional analysis. But that is easy too, just work out your formula so that all of your units match the one diagonal to the right of it until you are left with two that don't match--those are the units for your answer.

Thanks!! I'm going to hit a bunch of the online quiz sites and just hammer away at the problems until it clicks. Math isn't "unpossible" for me, but I really need a map to follow.

I have always been a mathaphobic, but since nursing school, and studying for hours in Pickar, I am finding it second nature--and that is a lot to say for me! Just go over and over and over the calculations and you will be fine!
