Has anyone ever had to write an IHP for Chronic Kidney Failure, or have experience with monitoring it at school? I have an initial 504 meeting this afternoon for a student with a new diagnosis, and am trying to prepare as much as possible.
I haven't received any orders from the student's doctor yet, and am not sure if the student will be having dialysis or a transplant, but am trying to cover the basics ahead of time. In doing research, there are a lot of factors to monitor with this condition, and it seems like most of them are things that we wouldn't be monitoring at school, like labs. One of the big things I am seeing is risk for infection, especially if the student is on dialysis, so I am wondering if it would be appropriate for the clinic to be where the student would rest as needed. I would worry about the student contracting another illness by being in here. Sorry for the word vomit; I just want to look like I know what I'm talking about in this meeting!

If the 504 can't be delayed I would go into it with the statement you've yet to receive MD orders for school intervention so you can't provide specific input in that regard. And...your clinic is not a resting place for someone with a compromised immune system.
Don't make any assumptions about the child's medical condition.

I love that! I had a student last year; he was on dialysis, missed half a day every other day and when he attended he was on a medication (and I can't remember what) to take only if he ate something. He had other requirements, like he had to measure his water/fluid intake - but I did not do that. So the IHP was only for med dosage.
I agree with OD - until you get some marching orders, an IHP is not feasible. Do we know if the kiddo's on the transplant list?

I don't yet know if this student is on the transplant list, or is just going to have dialysis at this time. Supposedly, there is only one kidney, and it is working at 50%. I do know they will be taking medication, but only at home.
I appreciate the info about the IHP; I will hold off on writing it until I get more information. My plan at the meeting today is to find out exactly what interventions will be needed at school, what would constitute an emergency for this student, and emphasize that the clinic is not an appropriate place for resting. This is a 9th-grader, so I do expect a lot of independence.
